ENGINEERING JK’s Engineering Multi-disciplined business JK’s Engineering has been making its mark in the southern South Island for more than 115 years. The company offers a comprehensive range of light to heavy engineering, sheet metal and related services and operates from the province’s largest and best equipped workshop which covers 4,500 square metres in Invercargill. A large part of JK’s business involves upgrades, shutdowns and general maintenance for companies in the meat, dairy, timber, fertiliser, agriculture, horticulture and transport industries, as well as construction projects of widely varying scale. A major project JK’s Engineering currently sub-contracted to by Amalgamated Builders is the structural elements of the Distinction Hotel. This involves gutting the seven-level former Menzies Building, built in 1966, along with similar work on an adjacent four-story building. Both buildings have been stripped back to their bare concrete shell on each floor, with JK’s Engineering undertaking the comprehensive structural strengthening work required to bring them up the required seismic and building code standards. JK’s Engineering Manager Dwight Dougherty says the Distinction Hotel project includes installing new floor columns, beams, canopies and a new roof structure, with the structural steel being incorporated into the existing concrete elements. “It’s passing through concrete beams so there’s quite a bit of site measuring and design work to get it all to go together. It’s reasonable complex because now we are actually doing a skeletal frame around the exterior of the building for the façade. “It’s a big part of the project and trying to get a 60 year old building nice and square and straight now is a bit of a mission. There are variances in widths and heights up to 40mm difference in places.” Dwight expects JKs part of the contract to be finished about July, but this will follow on with building the structural elements of the car park building. JK’s impressive workshop equipment includes six five tonne overhead cranes, plus eight and 10 tonne Hamilton cranes, a Ficep Vanguard beamline and PCS profile cutter, a 300 tonne press brake bender and a 200 tonne CNC press brake bender, 2.5 metre plate rollers and a 3.6 metre wide guillotine that can cut up to 12mm thick plate. JK’s also has a dedicated machine shop for conventional and CNC milling and lathing, with the ability to lathe up to 1100mm in diameter and 5.5 metres in length. It’s most sophisticated item of equipment is a 5500MHB profile cutter, installed in 2020. “It’s a big part of the project and trying to get a 60 year old building nice and square and straight now is a bit of a mission. There are variances in widths and heights up to 40mm difference in places.” A high definition plasma and gas cutting profile cutter, it is the largest in Southland and is capable of drilling, bevelling, and etching a range of thicknesses from 1.2mm to 100mm. While the majority of its work is for commercial and industrial clients, JK’s is also known for residential builds that require structural steel, as well as features such as handrails, balustrades, fire surrounds and hearths, kitchen finishes and architectural features that includes the likes of Corten steel.
