ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN ArchDraught Ltd T T Russell Fredric ArchDraught was established in 2004 with Phil Orr and Rebecca Amundsen striving to build a business that would provide a lifestyle and time with family. Rebecca is well known in civic and community circles and, in addition to his professional qualifications, Phil has experience in joinery and building so is not shy about handling a hammer when working on a personal project. “It gives me just that little bit of an edge of actually knowing the construction industry,” he says. This also means he and his team have a good eye for knowing the pros and cons of a building site whenever there is to opportunity to have early involvement in a project. In one instance, Phil and a client, who is a builder, viewed multiple sections before a property was purchased. “I’d go with him to site, we’d draft a concept standing on site of what I’d think would fit on the site. We did that six times before we found a site that he ended up building on.” Where possible, ArchDraught prefers to include subcontractors in reviewing construction documents once the design is confirmed to ensure the building process is efficient and robust. ArchDraught’s team can design a wide variety of projects including renovations, new residential builds and large commercial projects and provides a comprehensive service that includes design, consent documentation, and liaising with consultants and councils throughout the consent process. “One of the things I love doing in regards to alterations is seeing what we can do with the existing footprint or if we can extend it. You can save so much money by utilising the existing square footage of the home, but just reorientating everything around. “Nine times out of ten we’ve achieved quite a lot with renovations in that regard.” Sometimes the cost of achieving people’s wants, needs and dreams is very different to the reality of their budget. However, having a limited renovation budget need not be an obstacle, and Phil cites a client who had work completed over a period of time to suit their cashflow. “They were still able to do the renovation over the next two years, but they got a better house. There was similar money spent, but they got a more comfortable house, reduced heating costs, the sun coming into the living room all year round and they are just over the moon. “They are so pleased that I talked to them about those ideas, gave them the opportunity to think about it and then they ran with it.” ArchDraught have also had similar situations for new builds, but Phil’s innovative solution was to suggest building a smaller home that could be added to in the future. “We’ve got a couple of concept plans that we’ve done that basically start off with a two bedroom home.” ArchDraught has experience with designing for various building methods, from contemporary family houses to straw bale and post and beam construction and tiny homes, all with an emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency. • Domestic Plumbing • Bathroom & Laundry • Renovation & Maintenance Plumbing 021 2222 025 merv@rmpplumbing.nz www.rmpplumbing.nz SIZE Commercial — Industrial Domestic BRENDON SCOTT 027 436 4369 deveryelectrical@gmail.com
