BUILDING Trenz Homes business model based on using technology combined with low overheads is creating valued-based quality for its clients. Established more than a decade ago, its Invercargill-based Southland franchise is owned by Ben McHugh who, as a well-established independent builder operating from Winton, Central Southland, saw several advantages in being part of a franchise business. “It was mainly to get into that internet driven market. Ten years ago there was definitely a shortage of farm houses and farmers would go to websites and look for housing that would suit their workers, or people were buying bare sections where they could have a house built. “I noticed I was missing out on quite a bit of that market and saw what Trenz Homes could offer such as the IT software, the website and marketing.” All of this and more, including a wide range of designs, is provided by Trenz Homes and most importantly, to simplify the design and building process for its clients. The company uses Utecture, software for quantifying materials and for pricing, to create 3D renders and for consent documentation. “We’re driven by innovation and use leading technology, designs and products to consistently deliver high-performance homes more efficiently. It’s our focus to provide beautiful and affordable homes in the region.” A big advantage of using Utecture is that it enables a short turnaround for quotes from the initial design to working drawings and a quotation. Trenz Homes Southland is entirely locally owned and employs four builders. Ben counts himself as being very fortunate to have had a consistent workload with house and land packages being a speciality. “We were flat out last year and this year we are extremely busy as well.” Trenz Homes range of plans are well-considered, can cater for every need and are perfect either to customise or to use for inspiration for a totally bespoke build. A home completed by Trenz Southland late last year in the Invercargill suburb of Waikiwi for a family epitomises the approach of building to the highest possible standard within the available budget. A generous 230 square metres, it has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, one of which is off the master bedroom, and a large double garage on a large section that allows plenty of area for the two young children to get some fresh air. The need for both adult and child space has also been considered inside and although there is open plan living and dining, the lounge can be separated by feature tongue and groove barn-style sliding doors, plus a scullery adds considerable to the functionality of the kitchen. “They were on a budget, one of them was going on to parental leave, they were looking for a family home that that is going to suit them for a few years to come; something newer than what they were in.” “They wanted it to be warm so we opted for a couple of big heat pump units.” The exterior is clad in grey brick which is complemented with feature walls of Duragroove panelling which, painted in a dark tone, contrasts nicely with the light grey brick. Sliding aluminium stacker doors in the living area open on to the northwest facing yard. “The design process was done in-house. We altered a standard plan that was similar to what they wanted.” LEADING WITH www.thwaitesaluminium.co.nz 47 Mersey Street, Invercargill | 0800 432 478 THWAITES ALUMINIUM Fairview windows & doors, offer quality products that are made for New Zealand homes.
