96 | T T Russell Fredric Alexandra home a real head turner BUILDING McLean Building A client’s brief to McLean Building director Lachie McLean was simple, but left no doubt about their expectations. “They just wanted the house built to a high standard all round,” Lachie says. The finished home, built in Sequoia Close, Alexandra, reveals McLean Building’s team met both the client’s expectation and what Lachie and his team demand of themselves. A senior couple, the client is so pleased they have provided a testimonial of the quality of the workmanship as well as of their appreciation for the team taking a consultative approach towards them during construction, along with being “unfailingly polite”. “We found ourselves to be very fortunate in our choice of builder,” the client says. The L-shaped four bedroom home provides 225 square metres of floor space and is strongly contrasted with white plaster walls and a black corrugated coloured steel roof which is balanced by vertical cedar in the gables to create some warmth. “I drive past it quite often, it looks really striking.” Although it was completed before the increase in insulation regulations last May, it has a high level of insulation, including insulation in the concrete floor, and well exceeds the new building code. As well as enjoying a warm, comfortable home, the clients are also benefiting from the savings created by the solar panels and an electric vehicle charger specified in the design. The interior scheme is entirely the wife’s creation and showcases her artistic flair though tasteful design elements that punctuate the white walls and ceiling. These include unique light fittings, of which one is an imported multi-coloured coloured bubble array in the hallway, floral Roman blinds in the kitchen/living area with a matching squab and cushions in a window seat, and a colourful floral kitchen splashback, while the vaulted ceiling adds a sense of spaciousness. “It’s all perfectly done; our team took a lot of pride in it. It wasn’t a hard house to build, the clients were unreal to work with and the builders loved building it for them.” Office administrator Jaimie De Koning says McLean Building employs 10 staff and in addition to building houses, it is a concrete contractor which means it constructs its own floors and foundations as well as completing general concrete work which is a part of the business overseen by Lachie. McLean Building has been providing its concrete contracting services on the Aurum on Clyde lifestyle village development. “We are placing all of the floor slabs and driveways; as much as we do building we also do a lot of the concrete side of things as well,” Jaimie says. McLean Building has a good amount of forward work this year, with upcoming projects including a timber house in Roxburgh, a high end build in Clyde, some renovations and “lots of concrete”. Jaimie describes Alexandra and the surrounding area as being a well-kept secret, and despite a nationwide downturn in the residential building sector due to increased interest rates, she has not seen a decline locally. “It’s a beautiful place to live. It’s a really good mix of young families and retired people and we have had a lot of builds lately for retired couples as well as first home buyers. There’s been people moving from Auckland and Christchurch down here. “It is a really good place for families to grow up. It’s got lots of opportunities for all ages.” “They just wanted the house built to a high standard all round.” Mecca Built Two entries in awards T T from page 95 “A large roof top lawn flows from the decking area and there is an outdoor kitchen and a third private courtyard on the ground floor for visiting guests.” As excited participants in this year’s House of the Year Awards, Mecca Built is set to showcase their prowess through two exceptional entries.
