Tristan Ritchie and Matt Simmers are the owner-operators of Symmetry Build. They have been on the tools and balancing the books together for more than a decade now, although the original company they set up went through a rebrand a year or so back. A home-build or renovation project can be a notoriously stressful time for a client, but the pair pride themselves on seamless project management that smoothes the process for all parties. “We communicate throughout, and manage the whole project to take the stress out of the hands of the client,” Tristan says. “There are still decisions for them to make along the way, but we help out, even as far as liaising with interior designers and the like. We just go the full hog to give our best service, so we can make the whole process enjoyable rather than stressful.” Tristan describes their approach as “no nonsense” and transparent. “There can be a bit of mucking around that comes with construction, and there can be a lot of time wasting and added costs, which ultimately go back to the client, so we try and monitor that and save where we can, without cutting corners.” The team is in the midst of a challenging project – one of five architectural builds they A striking home being built by newly-established firm Mt Hutt Construction is taking shape at Meadowlands Green in shburton, allowing the company to showcase its skills. Featuring an impressive mix of materials and modern architectural design, incorporating steel, stone, plaster, and cedar, the 360spm home will be a standout feature in the area. The home was designed by Christchurch architectural firm Threefold Architecture, who Mt Hutt Construction owner Stirling Clark says he enjoys working with on some challenging and rewarding design features. It is a significant endeavour for the young construction company, which has been in operation for just two years, and Stirling hopes it will showcase what his firm can do. The home is designed with distinctive roof pitches and sloped ceilings, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The exterior features stonework using Hard as Rock stone, a manufactured product that blends seamlessly with the additional plaster and cedar elements, and large glass elements. Inside, there are three bedrooms, a yoga room, and a large atrium that connects the main lounge to a covered outdoor area. Once complete, this building will be a certified passive home with stunning high-performance, triple-glazed Siberian larch windows and air-tight construction. In the early days, Tristan and Matt found themselves taking on any job, big or small, to establish their business. Now, projects are increasingly allowing them to flex their building muscles – and those of their growing team. “Over the last year or two we have been transitioning to a higher-end market. Jobs feed off other jobs – friends of clients contact us off the back of a project,” Tristan says. Symmetry Build operates with an eightstrong crew; however, there are plans to add another experienced builder to the mix to accommodate fresh projects in the pipeline. The horizon is looking bright. “I feel like everything has fallen into place, and we’ve hit our stride and we’re running at full potential as a company at the moment,” Tristan says. “It’s very satisfying.” Tristan and Matt have managed to build a life together alongside a successful business, and the men’s high school friendship has stood the test of time. “We live near each other in Arrowtown, we’ve both got young kids the same age, and our partners are best mates,” Tristan says. “Even if we’re not working on the same job, we catch up twice a week or so and have a chat about work and have a barbecue on the weekends with our families.” laundry and bathroom. “Everything’s big,” says Stirling. The layout divides the home into two distinct sections, with one end serving as the main residence and the other functioning as a guest wing. “It should be quite a feature-looking house when it’s done,” Stirling adds. With extensive experience in the region, including working as foreman on the architecturally designed Methven Library and a number of high-end builds, Stirling has been able to bring that experience to his own business. The build is expected to take approximately 12 months, with Stirling and an apprentice managing the bulk of the work. The homeowner, a retired farmer, and his brother with time to spare, have also been assisting on-site. The project came to Stirling through a friend he had previously completed work for. “They were happy with what I’d done,” he says. After pricing the job competitively, he secured the contract. “Because I’m a bit smaller, I can be a bit cheaper,” he explains. Servicing the Queenstown Lakes District with quality tilers.
