| 23 Barrett Homes Cromwell: Shannon Farm REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Some larger-than-life paintings adorn the walls of Barrett Homes’ latest Cromwell show home. The artist, Dee Copeland herself, co-owner of Barrett Homes. Alongside running the Central Otago building company with her husband Jason, Dee is an accomplished artist, renowned for her large oil-on-canvas works. She has painted many famous faces, including former Invercargill mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt, sportsmen Mark Todd and Sir Richard Hadlee, entrepreneurs A.J. Hackett and Sir Michael Hill, and mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary. Dee is intrigued by the human face, and says her large-scale portraits can end up “looking like vast landscapes of the face”. Capturing the soul.... “A finished painting should capture someone’s soul and personality, putting it on to canvas and creating a memory that will last forever.” Dee also enjoys printmaking and sketching, and is a published illustrator of children’s books. At Barrett Homes, clients benefit from Dee’s creativity and eye for style. However, she admits she also plays something of a “work mum” to the company’s team of builders. “I’m happy to give them a drive home after a beer on a Friday,” she says. “I genuinely think our team are good humans, and I feel fortunate to have them.
