REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT A wall in Olphert Contracting’s office adorned with awards and accreditations proves that a penchant for perfectionism has served the company and its clients well. The Invercargill-based painting, decorating and specialist coatings business has grown its reputation on transforming Southland homes and commercial premises for nearly two decades. Owner Darryl Olphert is unapologetic about being something of a perfectionist, and takes pride in his and his team’s ability to deliver superior service in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. “You’ve got to put your best foot forward on every job and work through any challenges that might arise. You’ve got to do the best job possible because word-of-mouth, especially in a small town, is pretty huge,” Darryl says. “You’ve always got to turn up when you’re wanted and do the job and get it done right.” Olphert Contracting has expertise in an extensive range of residential and commercial painting, stopping, wallpapering, commercial and industrial coating systems, spray painting and much more. The business employs 17 staff, which includes a dedicated plasterboard stopping team of five. About 10 years ago, Darryl purchased a long-standing Invercargill fibrous plaster business making cornices, ceilings rises etc. This diversity of services has been an asset, both in terms of the workflow and for the variety of work the staff can be offered. As a testament to Olphert Contracting’s genuine commitment to quality, the raft of awards to its credit includes six Master Painters New Zealand awards in the past seven years. “We do the work that wins awards, and our clients can take a lot of confidence from that. We’ve been around for quite a while and people know about the quality of what we do. It’s all the micro-skills that makes someone a great tradesperson.” Consequently, even through a challenging economy, Olphert Contracting has had ample work on its books, with 2025 proving to be a very busy year so far. Olphert Contracting is a Dulux-accredited member, with the full backing of a national paint brand in consulting on paint types, colour selection, time frames and costs to integrate clients’ needs into a direct and affordable solution. “There are so many interior and exterior undercoats and top coats and primers, water-based and oil-based with various sheens, and you need to work out what you need and why. There’s a lot involved in it. “As with all painting, preparation is key. We assess a site’s environmental and atmospheric conditions, and tailor our industrial and marine coating applications accordingly, taking into consideration adhesion, chemical bonding, wear resistance, maintenance and cost-efficiency. “Our rigorous assessment process determines the best surface preparation method for the long term.” Preparation includes traditional dry and wet abrasive blasting, or high-pressure water blasting for minimal environmental impact. Olphert Contracting’s team of 17 includes four apprentices – two female and two male – with trade qualification through BCITO typically requiring three years of time on the tools, plus block courses. It is always a proud moment for both Darryl and a newly qualified apprentice when they get to show off their trade certificate at the company’s office. 027 233 8089 www.archerconstruction.co.nz kerry@archerconstruction.co.nz k claymo.tash@xtra.co.nz m 0274 507 276 Pleased to support Darryl and the team at Olphert Contracting Crosbie Construction Master Builders R e g i s t e r e d Mark Crosbie 021 183 6060 crosbiemark@hotmail.com New Houses Renovations Decks & Fences Farm Buildings
