INFRASTRUCTURE Fulton Hogan Timaru T T Karen Phelps During the economic slowdown Fulton Hogan’s Timaru branch has continued to provide vital infrastructure services across South Canterbury, maintaining its position as a key employer and service provider in the region. With a team of approximately 115 staff, the branch’s services are all tailored to meet local needs. “We perform an array of services in the region,” says Linton Clarke, Timaru branch manager. “We operate the only asphalt plant in Timaru, have a quarry in Levels, and provide traffic management services, surfacing services including asphalt and chip sealing, as well as excavation, drainage and road maintenance.” The company’s long-standing presence in Timaru reflects its commitment to the South Canterbury region, where it maintains critical infrastructure contracts, including road maintenance for both Timaru District Council and the Mackenzie District Council. It also works on competitively tendered projects for the likes of New Zealand Transport Agency, Waimate District Council and private construction clients for land development and associated support services. Other significant clients include KiwiRail, Fonterra, Environment Canterbury, PrimePort and Alpine Energy, demonstrating the breadth of Fulton Hogan’s capabilities and relationships across the region’s major infrastructure stakeholders. The branch recently completed several significant projects showcasing its technical capabilities. A substantial undertaking on State Highway 1 at Evans Street in Timaru involved a structural mill and fill operation, where crews removed 220mm of existing asphalt surface before replacing it with new structural asphalt. “Local product being used for a local solution. We manufacture that product at our asphalt plant and our local team pave the road,” says Linton, highlighting the company’s vertically integrated approach that leverages its local manufacturing capabilities. Another recent achievement was the Port Loop Road structural asphalt project, serving one of the main heavy traffic routes to Timaru Port. This comprehensive project for Timaru District Council included not just structural resurfacing, but also replacement of drainage infrastructure, footpaths and kerbs. Fulton Hogan’s Timaru branch was also proud to complete the construction work for Enviro NZ’s state-of-the-art organics composting facility at the Redruth Resource Recovery Park, the first facility of its kind in the South Island. “There were very strict tolerances when it came to construction with regards to concrete levels, drainage on site and other elements.” The multi-million-dollar facility, completed in late 2024, required Fulton Hogan to deliver specialised infrastructure, including a building, concrete pad with bunkers, and complex drainage systems capable of containing gases and fluids. The facility is designed to process approximately 16,000 tonnes of green waste from South Canterbury in the 12 months since opening, producing around 6000 tonnes of compost through a sophisticated process involving ECS bunkers and a maturation phase. Linton says Fulton Hogan’s capabilities are enhanced by its specialised team and equipment. “For example, we have surfacing specialists and operate two bitumen sprayers. We have strength in the region for application of bitumen and have storage facilities in Timaru for emulsion bitumen.” As a leading asphalt supplier, Fulton Hogan offers comprehensive services from design to construction. Its technical teams design fit-forpurpose, hard-wearing asphalts for various settings, including ports, airports, roads, commercial car parks and private driveways. The company has also embraced sustainability initiatives, implementing energy-efficient materials and processes compliant with regulations. It has been reducing production carbon emissions by supplying Reduced Energy Asphalt (REA™) in New Zealand, made at lower production temperatures using additives or foaming techniques. Fulton Hogan also supplies quality aggregates from its network of quarries, managed under stringent environmental plans to preserve resources for future generations As economic conditions fluctuate, Fulton Hogan continues to adapt while maintaining its essential role in Timaru’s local infrastructure development. • Truck Hire • Truck Sales • Equipment Rental Proudly supporting FultonHogan - Timaru quotes@cvh.co.nz 0800 284 4473 MM CIVIL Ltd is a locally owned company based in Timaru with over 20 years experience & a passion for quality finishings.
