66 | CONTRACTING Hydro-Pro Central T T Aimee Wilson There’s a lot going on underground Hydro-Pro’s large 7000L trucks use a hydraulic vacuum unit, which through the use of extension hoses are powerful enough to dig or remove material up to 90 metres away. Hydro-Pro Central has been involved in some large-scale sub-surface solutions throughout Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago, helping to improve the civil and utility sectors. Company owners Alex de Kort and Cole Lucas of Wanaka combined their expertise, and invested in modern technology that allows companies to locate underground services and provides a damage-free excavation solution. Using hydro-excavation to dig deep safely without causing harm to surrounding services and infrastructure also gives businesses reassurance about the health and safety of their employees and equipment. Hydro-Pro’s large 7000L trucks use a hydraulic vacuum unit, which through the use of extension hoses are powerful enough to dig or remove material up to 90 metres away. The trucks are most commonly used for service locations via potholing and hydro-trenching. A smaller, 3000L truck for contaminated works is commonly used on projects in partnership with Drain Vision – Cole’s separate business that operates CCTV pipe inspection and jetting. Alex’s background is in underground service locating and machinery operation, while Cole also runs Pipe Medic South (pipe relining), and the pair offer the whole spectrum of services to clients from Queenstown Lakes right through into Southland and Fiordland. Alex sold Find it Geosystems, a utility locating business offering electromagnetic induction (EMI) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to Locate Services NZ so he could concentrate on the hydro-excavation business, and their specialised service means they now also collaborate with the new Locate team. As a result, their successful drain-specialist company soon expanded, and now, as well as hydro-excavation, they can tackle utility water-blasting and silt removal. “Cole and I would work closely together when I needed stormwater and sewers located accurately with CCTV cameras etc., and Cole would get me to help when his clients would need other services marked out.” Much of their current work is within the utility sector, where power companies are upgrading throughout the district. One of their recent big projects was the upgrades to the Queenstown substation, where the sheer volume of buried cables meant their hydro-excavation units had to be used instead of the more traditional mechanical or hydraulic excavation equipment. “People can’t afford to take shortcuts anymore,” Alex says. The tight-knit crew of experienced operators includes three Hydro-Pro and three Drain Vision staff. “Cole and I pride ourselves on being owner-operators – often the person you call will be the person who will show up on site.” Their future plans are to keep providing a high-quality service for the civil and utility sectors by providing those sub-surface solutions. “We look forward to staying relevant and will continue to invest in the latest industry equipment,” Alex says.
