After leaving the army, Glenn got into business by first landing himself a job managing a joint venture for Port Otago and fishing company Sealord’s frozen storage facility in Dunedin. This made him aware of the absence of a service provider, who could minimise the inevitable problems confronting vessels in port. “It’s not necessarily about providoring or stevedoring options, but rather being a onestop-shop where we handle all the regulations, services and repairs that a visiting vessel may need, and in doing so we provide what we believe is the most efficient turnaround for vessels in the country,” Glenn says. “What we do is manage the whole package for a vessel coming into local ports, removing the hassles and headaches involved in coordinating everything from berthage to repairs, processes that can otherwise be both lengthy and costly. “Our key service areas are compliance, project management and contractor liaison, on top of marine servicing and maintenance. “If a vessel comes in needing repairs, we put them in touch with specifically qualified repairers, making sure that all the regulations relating to working on marine vessels are adhered to. “Berthage and wharfage fees are charged out directly to the client, and we charge administratively for our time.” NZ Marine Logistics serves the Bluff, Nelson and Lyttelton ports from its base in Dunedin, where it occupies a warehouse on Willis Street with a full-time staff of four, plus a couple of part-timers. The company services around 170 vessels a year, with the time devoted to each ranging from a few hours through to three or four days. The vessels range from in-shore and deep-sea fishing boats, bulk and container ships to super yachts, research vessels, tugboats, cruise liners, and bulk cargo and off-shore support ships. Glenn himself is currently involved as project manager on an unusually long job for NZ Marine Logistics, the five-week survey and repair of the luxury yacht Pacific Jemm. The vessel is usually based in Queenstown, but for the time being it is sitting on a temporary slipway at Kingston at the southern end of Lake Wakatipu. While most of his clients are New Zealand-based, Glenn has others in various countries, including Australia, South Korea and France’s Reunion Island. NZ Marine Logistics is also a distributor for the Invercargill-based Stormline, the global marketer of a range of maritime wet-weather gear, covering several types of jacket, as well as bibs, smocks, pullovers and vests. Stormline specialises in foul-weather gear for the marine, agricultural and commercial sectors, and NZ Marine Logistics takes orders from incoming vessels, and is able to supply the goods within 24 hours. “The fishing fleet staff are particularly keen on the Stormline products, specially those working on the scampi boats,” Glenn says.
