T T Rosa Watson A Canterbury engineering firm run by a “cheeky duo” couple is on a mission to make the engineering world easier to deal with. Gareth and Renee Joblin of Rolleston-based Joblin Engineering are all about innovative solutions, convenient repairs and making engineering jobs more accessible. The company can undertake all types of welding and fabrication jobs, “and that kind of sets us apart, being able to do everything”, Renee says. This includes food-safe and stainless-steel welding. The team can carry out heavy-plant repairs like booms, buckets, crushers and loader, tooth replacements, handrail builds, custom-built ute decks, factory installs and light fabrication. The team works alongside larger civil construction companies, some who have their own traffic management. “They’ve required ute decks that hold the signs and traffic cones and things like that, so we have created a customised design that meets their needs perfectly,” Renee says. “We can also re-skin over trucks and install hungry sides if you need them.” And for businesses wanting a bespoke piece, they can do that too. “People can design their own thing and we can get it certified.” This has included building a four-metre-tall kitchen fork sculpture commissioned by a customer. The Rolleston workshop has a range of different welders and a press, with the recent addition of a larger band saw. There is a team of four in the workshop, including an apprentice, which is the largest team they have had to date. The business started out of the couple’s home garage in 2017, carrying out contract welding. In 2020 they were ready to move into larger premises. “As the years have gone by, we’ve quietly grown and added more and more to our team,” Renee says. All this while life threw them a number of challenges. In 2020, Gareth’s polycystic kidney disease progressed and he needed a transplant. The couple received the call that a donor had been found on the night of their wedding – February 7, 2020, and by early next morning Gareth was in surgery. Then the Covid-19 lockdown arrived. At the time, Renee was working as a health and safety advisor for the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak, and so Gareth was able to rest and recoup. “We came out of lockdown refreshed and ready. We got our first workshop in Rolleston in 2020 and we’ve just grown from there.” The couple each bring strong skills to the company. Gareth previously worked as a boilermaker and was a heavy fabrication engineer. Renee returned to New Zealand in 2016, having worked as compliance and safety manager for an engineering workshop. “I’d seen that there was a bit of a gap in the market for the little (engineering) jobs,” she explains. “People have trouble going to the big engineers to get little jobs done. Gareth’s amazing at inventing things and coming up with outof-the-box solutions, and I knew the systems and processes of running the business. With our powers combined we knew we could be unstoppable team.” Most of the company’s work is business-to-business, she says. “And it’s just naturally grown. But we never turn away anyone. We can help anyone.” The business looks set to continue to grow from its humble beginnings, with plans to invest in more upgrading technology and equipment. “That’s our goal this year – to continue growing the business and upgrading all our equipment.” DTD is pleased that Joblin Engineering has chosen us as the preferred supplier for engineering consumables. 03 343 6345 sales@drillstapsdies.co.nz drillstapsdies.co.nz We help busy businesses keep their machinery and plant running smoothly, so they get the most out of their equipment.
