ENGINEERING Irving Tooling Solutions Whether it’s for a company developing high-tech rocket propulsion systems or a small agricultural engineering workshop, Christchurch’s Irving Tooling Solutions provides nationwide support across the machining sector. Irving Tooling Solution’s application engineers, Jonathon Irving and James Lubbers, make a point of going on-site to match their products to the clients’ particular application, and they have a proven track record for minimising the cost per part, and increasing productivity. Jonathon, who established Irving Tooling Solutions more than 20 years ago, came from a toolmaking background, completing his apprenticeship with prominent Christchurch firm PDL Industries, best known for manufacturing light switches and heat-treatment gear. He stayed with PDL for seven years, and then spent a further five years running CNC machines for Christchurch tool-maker Torks Tool Design. About eight years ago James joined the team, bringing extensive experience in stainless steel and large CNC machining – quite different from Jonathon’s background, so that between them they have a particularly broad knowledge base with which to serve their clientele. Irving Tooling Solutions is run from an office and warehouse close to Christchurch International Airport, giving good access to courier deliveries and pick-ups so products can reach their customers faster. The company carries a wide range of product in stock, and receives deliveries from its main tooling supplier, Kennametal, daily out of the US, Singapore and Germany. “The long relationship with a global tooling leader like Kennametal has been the key to the growth of our business,” Jonathon says. Five years ago the company started selling Blaser Swisslube cooling fluid. “Coolant is basically a mix of about 10% oil with water, but its effect on the tooling is often overlooked,” he says. “With the right cutting fluid, every tool you use in the machine will have increased performance. Blaser cutting fluid is unique in the marketplace due to its high performance and exceptional human compatibility. It does not contain the additives in many other brands that cause skin problems or are known carcinogens.” Irving Tooling Solutions is also agent for German firm Diebold, which boasts a unique shrink machine that measures individual chuck expansion, and for the company OSG, which offers a wide range of drilling and tapping products. Other companies represented include the 40-year-old Auckland-based Cognito Software with its global clientele, and tool manufacturers Vergnano, Widia, Mapal, Rineck, Vertex and OML work-holding. “The ability to supply product from large global leading brands is a big thing for a smaller company like ours, but they appreciate the value of a distributor with practical experience,” Jonathon says. “Strong feedback from customers confirms the value of Irving Tooling’s expertise in providing the right combination of tooling, coolant and work-holding that sets us apart in the market. “One of the things that I enjoy most about this job is getting to see first-hand the very diverse and innovative engineering across New Zealand. This allows us plenty of challenges, and to push the boundaries of what can be machined as we work together with our customers,” he says. “The long relationship with a global tooling leader like Kennametal has been the key to the growth of our business,” The company carries a wide range of product in stock, and receives daily deliveries from its main tooling supplier, Kennametal.
