Founded in Nelson in 2001, Arthouse also operates out of Blenheim and Christchurch, delivering design services nationwide. Directors Jorgen Anderson and Rachel Dodd lead a skilled team, who share a wide breadth of design experience. Last October, Arthouse welcomed senior associate Chris Nott to the team. He has an extensive background in residential architecture in Nelson and Blenheim, and ran his own local architectural practice for more than a decade. With Chris now leading the Arthouse Blenheim office, the practice is stepping up its presence in Blenheim and Marlborough to a whole new level. “I know Chris well, and could see that he would be a perfect fit for us in terms of his generosity of spirit and how well he gets on with people,” says Rachel. “We’re all enjoying having him as part of our team – it has been a seamless process.” In turn, Chris is relishing the experience of working with a bigger team that’s well-resourced. Having grown up in Blenheim, he has strong local networks and contacts that are now opening up new horizons for Arthouse in the region. “Arthouse has been a very good fit,” says Chris. “I have a lot of autonomy within the team, and having that bigger team with a range of skills really lifts the level of all our work.” With their 18-strong team working out of Nelson, Blenheim and Christchurch, Arthouse is well-equipped to deliver design projects anywhere in New Zealand. At time of writing, Arthouse was preparing a detailed design package for a new school hall in Te Anau, with another school project also coming up in Gore. “We cover all disciplines, including highend housing in the Marlborough Sounds,” observes Chris, noting that a beautiful hilltop home designed by Arthouse – Anakiwa House – won a 2024 NZIA Nelson Marlborough Architecture Award - Housing. “I’ve personally done a lot of work in the Sounds too. It’s not an easy place to design for, but our team has the knowledge and skills to ensure these projects get delivered to a high standard.” Other recent award-winning projects for the practice include Longbeach Bay Boatshed that won a 2024 NZIA Nelson Marlborough Architecture Award – Small Project Architecture; and Atawhai House in Nelson that won a 2024 Master Builders Regional Gold. Arthouse has a certified passive house designer in Christchurch, and is currently designing a number of high-performance homes to support sustainable and comfortable healthy living. Sustainability is a recurring theme for Arthouse, which has completed a number of mass- timber projects in health and education, including one that is part of a mass-timber carbon trial for the Ministry of Education. Timber also featured prominently in the Arthouse design for Blenheim’s new stateof-the-art hockey stadium, Punawai, which opened last May.
