Banks Building Services BUILDING Omarama has welcomed a breathtaking new $2 million residence with the completion of an ambitious, 18-month project by Banks’s Building Services showcasing the company’s expertise in high-end residential construction and attention to detail. Designed by renowned Dunedin architect Gary Todd, this 240sqm home is a striking example of modern craftsmanship, featuring a vertical macrocarpa weatherboard exterior. The light-coloured timber creates a warm yet sophisticated aesthetic, complemented by extensive internal plywood finishes. However, the project presented significant challenges, particularly due to the time-intensive nature of the negative detailing. “It was extremely time-consuming,” says Banks’s Building Services director Carl Banks. “The guys could only complete a few sheets of plywood a day because of the detailing involved, but the results are well worth the effort.” Adding to the complexity were polished concrete floors and a plywood ceiling, both requiring meticulous execution. Foreman Matt Smith, a local contractor who has a long history with Banks’s Building Services, was instrumental in bringing the project to life, ensuring precision and quality throughout. The project also included the construction of a 220sqm garage, further demonstrating the company’s capacity for large-scale builds. Omarama’s harsh climate added another layer of difficulty. The team faced extreme temperature swings, from -10°C with heavy frosts in winter to scorching 35°C days in summer. Despite the challenges, Matt and the team pushed through, determined to deliver a home of exceptional quality. The residence features extensive structural-steel framing, with timber elements carefully integrated between the steel components. One of the standout features is an expansive cantilevered window system and an oversized entryway, measuring an impressive three metres by six metres. These double sliding doors open on to a beautifully designed outdoor courtyard with louvre roofs, offering seamless indoor-outdoor living. For the skilled builders involved, seeing the finished product was a rewarding experience. “It’s satisfying to stand back at the end and admire the craftsmanship,” Carl says. “The attention to detail, the techniques, and the skills that went into this home make it something we’re all very proud of.” Supporting the project was Riki Wills, another key team member at Banks’s Building Services, who is now responsible for managing materials and ensuring smooth operations. “Riki’s my right-hand man,” says Carl. “He keeps things running and knows more about what’s happening than I do.” Banks’s Building Services is a cornerstone of the Oamaru construction industry. With more than 40 years in the trade and a deep connection to the local community, including 30 years in the local fire service, Carl has built a reputation for quality and reliability. The company has also diversified beyond residential construction, working on commercial and civil projects for the local council. Carl has also played a key role in flood-mitigation efforts through his involvement with Hydro Response. He has recently worked in Brisbane, installing portable dam systems to protect infrastructure from flooding, and was there before, during, and after Cyclone Alfred. “We weren’t in a location that was hard hit by the cyclone, but the water still came right up to our barriers.” Despite fluctuations in the construction industry, Carl remains optimistic about Oamaru’s future. With affordable land prices attracting new residents, steady housing development, and a strong farming sector, the region continues to thrive. “Oamaru is a great place to do business,” Carl says. www.aoteaelectric.co.nz 4 Trent Street Oamaru | 03 434 8791 “Aotea is proud to be associated with Banks Building Services Ltd” ELECTRIC • COMMUNICATIONS • AIR CONDITIONING • FIRE a Workm nship 027 226 8287 OAMARU + WAITAKI VALLEY E: darrynstewartpainters@gmail.com Quality painters & decorators ltd
