But the end result, well, it’s beautiful.” BUILDING Queenstown-based Dent Construction is creating buildings worthy of the dramatic scenery in which they are located. The builders specialise in high-end residential and commercial construction projects, leveraging off owner Steven Dent’s long experience and strong community connections. A born-and-bred Queenstowner, Steven spent close to two decades working for a large construction company in the growing town. However, presented with the challenge of building a mate’s dream home a few years ago, he struck out on his own – and hasn’t looked back. Led by Steve, the now 11-strong Dent team is gaining a reputation for its commitment to superior workmanship on complex builds in challenging conditions. Take ‘The Bendigo Home’ project, for example. Located on an isolated rural section above Lake Dunstan on the outskirts of Cromwell, this large-scale, high-spec project required careful planning, meticulous attention to detail, and an ability to problem solve. It even involved the delivery of a swimming pool by helicopter – a feat with no room for error. The end result: a showstopper home, delivered within budget, on time and to the client’s exacting standards. The design phase is key, and Steve collaborates early with architects and has an eye for detail. “It’s about making the most of the space, whether it’s a particular viewpoint or something else,” Dent office manager Anna Black says. “We aim to achieve a result that makes the most of the amazing backdrop and respects the environment.” On the iconic Queenstown waterfront, Dent has finished the renovation of Finz, a wellknown dining spot on Steamer Wharf. “It was a really, really exciting job,” Anna says. “It is such a popular restaurant, right in the centre of town, which created its own complications in terms of building logistics. But the end result, well, it’s beautiful.” Another commercial project – the new O-Studio in Queenstown’s Five Mile precinct – has also wrapped up. “It’s a modern wellness centre, and it also has eight apartments,” Anna says. “It feels like the ball is continuing to roll on these commercial projects.” Next on the work calendar are a commercial-residential building on central Hallenstein Street, and an innovative new hot pool and floating sauna attraction. As projects ramp up, Dent Construction has migrated from a home office to a commercial space, evidence of the company’s successful expansion. Anna puts it down to experience and relationships. “Steve has been in the game for so long, plus he grew up in Queenstown, so he has that real connection to the area, to the community,” she says. “He has so many great relationships with subcontractors. “The people around Steve on a worksite really care about getting it right for the client and producing a beautiful finished project.” Steve and his team work with integrity and maintain transparency, too. “When you’re working on such complex builds, it comes up a lot – the need to communicate well with people.
