SMBC thrives on complex and creative work, delivering immaculate attention to detail to turn each client’s unique vision into a stunning reality, in the process winning two Registered Master Builders Gold Reserve awards in recent years. This, combined with a long-term working relationship with Dave Reid and Mark Tutty, the developers of The Terrace. a master planned neighbourhood in Wanaka, has led to SMBC having the opportunity to be involved in this unique development. The Terrace is a park-like gated neighbourhood positioned at a unique vantage point looking towards nearly every mountain visible fromWanaka township. SMBC was based in Christchurch, but relocated to Wanaka at the start of 2020. Sam has come full circle having completed his building apprenticeship in Wanaka in the early 2000’s. “At that time Mark and Dave were here in Wanaka; I didn’t actually know them then.” Sam subsequently moved to Christchurch just before the earthquakes hit. Mark and Dave formed a company in Christchurch about the same time with Sam undertaking a lot of work for them. “That’s how SMBC and The Terrace development have come together. Our goal was always to come back to Wanaka The Terrace - a Natural Fit for SMBC at some point.” SMBC was formed in 2012 and after the initial focus on earthquake projects, it transitioned to new residential architectural builds and developing its own client base. For Sam, forming good long-term relationships based on integrity, whether with clients, developers, sub-contractors or suppliers has been an important part of the business. This ethos has certainly paid o with SMBC “ lat out” in Wanaka despite the recent move. It utilises a combination of 10 employed and contract builders, including Sam. The Terrace allows for 13 architecturally designed high-end two to four bedroom houses, designed by Tobin Smith of Common Architecture, Christchurch who Sam also knows personally. He is extremely impressed with the design, features and quality of the homes as well as with the skill and experience of the builders working for the company. “As a company, this is the type of work that I want to be doing, I want to be challenged in what we are building.” There are currently four homes being built by SMBC in The Terrace, with another two in progress in Alpine Estate. While building high-end homes in volume is uncommon and a irst for SMBC, Sam is enjoying the challenge as well as the security of having forward work for the foreseeable future.
