Established by Deane Herbert in 2000 after eight years in the trenchless drilling industry, Subsurface Civil and Drilling specialises in several di erent methods of trenchless installation, including directional drilling, pipe ramming, thrust boring, conventional trenching, chain trenching, pipe cracking, and pipe bursting. “Today we own and operate several directional drills which are capable of installing pipes from 20mm in diameter up to 450m,” Deane says. “We take pride in our operations, withminimal disruption to the public and businesses with our hydro-excavation trucks.” Subsurface Civil and Drilling has run a hydro-excavation truck since its inception, quickly increasing to two trucks, and is now in the process of building its third. “Demand has increased, but it comes down to our trucks as well,” Deane says. “They are a very good unit, and once people have them, they keep requesting themback, whether they are old clients or new clients. It comes down to our sta as well, the trucks are no good without a good Trenchless drilling specialists operator, and our sta are such a big part of our business.” Deane employs a loyal teamof about 15, and the majority have been with the business for seven to 10 years. “They are comfortable with where they work, and we do our best to ensure they enjoy their work and are treated well.” With a range of clients and established working relationships with Christchurch City Council, Waimakariri District Council, Hurunui District Council, Selwyn District Council, and a number of private civil construction irms, Subsurface Civil and Drilling sta carry a range of quali ications in order to conduct safe and compliant on-site practices. Trenchless sta are all NZQA trained and certi ied, while others are quali ied in irst aid, SiteSafe, Constructsafe, and Dangerous Goods. Subsurface Civil and Drilling is a Christchurch City Council approved water installer and PEWelder, a Kiwirail approved installer, and an EAC achieved installer of electricity. Sister company Subsurface Utility Detection Services was established 18 months ago and has been rapidly growing. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is used to provide clients with critical information to avoid utility hazards when trenching or excavating, by locating underground services such as water, power, drainage, and buriedmanholes and valves.
