60 | BUILDING Tasman: You Build Award winning home ticks the boxes Kelly Deeks A covered hardwood deck is at level entry with the home, and runs its entire length . C lients’ dreams are the focus for Nelson and Tasman design and build firm You Build, with a personalised approach from concept to completion to create bespoke homes that meet clients’ briefs and exceed their expectations. In business since 2015, You Build is owned and managed by Matt and Janine Thomas. Matt is a licensed and qualified carpenter with a background in high end joinery on super yachts, while Janine’ background in com- mercial law and marketing has her perfectly placed to take care of You Build’s finances, marketing, and administration. You Build took a giant leap this year with its first ever entry into the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. “We were thrilled to take away a Gold, the Regional Kitchen Award, and the Regional Category win at our first House of the Year awards,” Janine says. “We also made it to the Top 100 and will compete again at the nation- al competition later this year, so watch this space. We are proud of every home we build, and we owe a massive thanks to our staff and the team at You Build.” The design of this award-winning, 136sqm home was a process worked through by Janine, her client, designer Ewan MacMaster from Christie Architecture in Wellington, and local architect Carlton Barton from Barton Architecture. With Janine’s input and Matt’s support, the client’s dreams were brought out into a clear plan. “Our client had family and nature in mind, with GreenStuf insulation in the roof cavities, carpets made from recycled fish nets, and a passive solar design for economical heating and cooling. The living spaces have been de- signed with family in mind, with an open plan kitchen and living area to allow for large family gatherings where many people can cook, eat, and socialise together.” Just a short walk away from Kaiteriteri beach and an estuary, the foundation of this home was one of the project’s biggest chal- lenges. More than 100 9m poles were driven into the ground under engineer supervision to form the foundation. Inside the home, every intersecting wall and ceiling have been designed in an array of com- plementary angles. With almost no square lines on the entire home, an eye-catching form has been created by a technically skilled team of builders. Outside, a covered hardwood deck is at level entry with the home, and runs its entire length. Between the living and sleeping zones, the deck pushes back into a recess, creating a sheltered outdoor room that can be used year round. Beyond the recess inside the home, a breezeway separates the living and sleep- ing areas, and features a window seat and storage space designed and installed by Ruby Bay Joinery. The kitchen won the Regional Kitchen Award, and was also designed and installed by Ruby Bay Joinery. The client was living in Europe for the entire project, so communi- cation was online, with a couple of site visits when the owner was visiting New Zealand. Significant design changes occurred during the consenting process and You Build worked hard to keep on top of these and communi- cate effectively with the client to ensure he could make the correct product selections. “We also communicated well with our amaz- ing team of staff and subcontractors to create what is an incredibly beautiful home,” Janine says. “This is what we do, We design homes our clients dream of, and work with them to make their dreams a reality.” WWW.BRIGHTWATER.CO.NZ • Design • Engineering • Fabrication • Construction • Maintenance Proudly Supporting You Build Ltd.
