62 | BUILDING Tasman: Mike Greer Homes Nelson and Marlborough Mike Greer style meeting the market Kelly Deeks T he new owners of Mike Greer Homes Nelson are securing their own futures with a new partnership which gives them a 50% share of about 80 sections under development in Richmond. Former Mike Greer Homes project man- agers Ben Malthus and Trevor Lineham pur- chased Mike Greer Homes Nelson and Mike Greer Homes Marlborough a year ago. “We had been working in the business for a few years, so we had a bit of insight,” Trevor says. “I’ve built for a lot of the housing com- panies, and I’ve always liked the style of home at Mike Greer Homes, the design, the eye for detail, and the clients are always put first.” The previous owners James and Richelle Petersen are still sharing their expertise with Ben and Trevor, with James providing all the concept designs for clients. Trevor says it is great to still be able to offer the flair for design that has become a signature for Mike Greer Homes Nelson and Marlborough. Working across both businesses, Ben and Trevor are selling into two quite different markets. In Nelson, the market is extremely busy with a wide range of clients from people getting into their first home, to second and third home builders, to investors, to retirees looking to downsize. “Because these days you can build a new home for almost the same cost as buying an existing home,” Trevor says. Meanwhile in Marlborough, the market is considerably slower but picking up, and the fact there are a couple of reasonably sized subdivisions now under development is help- ing to push demand along. Continuing with tradition at Mike Greer Homes Nelson, Ben and Trevor have taken home a Gold Award and a Regional Category win at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards 2021. This home was built when Mike Greer Homes Nelson was under its previous ownership, however Ben and Trevor project managed the build. “We thought it was a nice sized family home with some really excellent detailing, like polished timber floors and vaulted ceilings. The owners had quite a lot of input, which really helped to make the finish- ing touches what they are.” The substantial 283sqm home, clad in ver- tical shiplap cedar and white plaster, presents to page 64 some smart street appeal while being cleverly designed on the interior. At the same awards, Mike Greer Homes Marlborough won a Gold Award and the Re- gional Category for the Show Home category for its show home at Rose Manor in Blen- heim. This family home presents the perfect combination of privacy and street presence, with its striking white plaster cladding offset with vertical shiplap cedar features and dark joinery. A centralised backyard deck creates an outdoor room with bifold doors accessing the deck from three sides.
