W ith the aim of building beautiful homes for people, Nik Dayaram and Dimension Construction are rapidly becoming respected names to look out for in Canterbury’s busy construction industry. Having worked for Hoogervorst Architec- tural Builders as foreman for three years, Nik made the call to go out on his own in 2018. Roland Hoogervorst was the main contrac- tor on a large three-storey apartment develop- ment in Wigram and offered Nik the opportu- nity take on the carpentry contract. “There were seventy units involved in that project so our first big milestone as Dimension Construction was completing that project, which took about eighteen months.,” says Nik. “Roland then offered me another contract working on a Warren & Mahoney designed lodge in Flock Hill Station near Arthurs Pass.” With a floor area close to 1000sqm, the Flock Hill project involved Nik and his team in the foundation work as well as the stratified concrete walls that were poured in place in 400mm layers to achieve an earthy lime look. “There was a huge amount of work involved with all the structural reinforcing steel in- volved and kept us busy for most of last year,” says Nik. This year Dimension Construction has been involved in apartment blocks and housing developments around Christchurch often selected by lead contractors like Consortium Construction. “There is just so much development work in Christchurch at the moment, but we’ve also been engaged to construct some very large Widespan sheds on the Coast.” With projects ranging from light commercial to architectural residential projects, Nik says his passion really lies in those challenging architectural projects that forged much of his building background. Richard Loader “We have a couple of nice residential pro- jects coming up including another Warren & Mahoney design in Diamond Harbour. “A friend has just become a registered architect and we’re looking at partnering up to provide a design & build service. “I love the level of detail required with the architectural builds — you really have to use your brain. “Those kinds of projects often involve many variations so you have to develop a close working relationship with the client. You’re not just building a house for them, it’s almost like a piece of artwork.” Earlier this year Dimension Construction was engaged to build a curved kwila tropical boardwalk entranceway to a house in Sumner. Nik says that project involved a lot of complexity to achieve the correct curvature required using timber. “That is the kind of complexity we love to do.” From the outset of Dimension Construction Nik employed two apprentices to help with his workload. One apprentice has now qualified and moved into a foreman’s role, while the other is still completing his time. “I’ve just taken on another two apprentices and have a contractor on the West Coast who help with the sheds.” Admitting to possessing a certain way that he likes things done, Nik handpicks young people who are keen and want to learn the trade. Reflecting on his journey over the last three years Nik says having the right attitude, work ethic and a hunger for quality craftsmanship has been key. “We’re a happy team and like doing what we do.” “There is just so much development work in Christchurch at the moment, but we’ve also been engaged to construct some very large Widespan sheds on the Coast.” Architectural and residential homes and light commercial construction 027 565 7021 nikhil@dimensionconstruction.co.nz Proud to support Dimension Construction CONTACT BROOK SKATES 027 279 4799 BROOK@TSROOFING.NZ
