100 | COMMUNITY Southbase Construction - Te Aratai College Kim Newth College an inspiration for community The Te Aratai College campus includes an impressive Creativity and Innovation Block for science, technology, arts and outreach learning; a 650-seat hall; a multi-purpose wharenui and gym; a learning hub and student centre; and student-friendly courtyards. A real turning point for the east side of Christchurch was reached in June with the official opening of Te Aratai College, Pathway to the Sea. All involved are thrilled at how this special project has come together and is now helping to reinvigorate the local community. Linwood College was damaged in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake and then demolished in 2019. Ngāi Tūāhūriri gifted the new name for the stunning new school that now proudly stands on the original site on Aldwins Rd. Southbase Construction led the build and was the project’s demolition contractor, with the team also conducting ground-testing and asbestos management at the site. Southbase project manager Jarrod Ward was named a finalist at the 2022 New Zealand Building Industry Awards for his contribution to the project. At the 2022 Property Industry Awards, the project received the Greenstone Group Education Property Award. Along with Southbase and several key subcontractors, other key partners involved were the Ministry of Education, Architectus, Aurecon, Beca and RDT Pacific. “Everyone involved had the best intentions for this project,” says Jarrod. “We all knew what a difference it would make to the Linwood community, which had been battling away since the earthquakes. Our team really enjoyed being a part of this, as did the wider team. They had the best working relationships, making the job a lot easier. “Te Aratai College is as much about the community as the school; it has been designed as a community hub where people feel welcome. Now that it’s open, you can see the whole area returning to life with other construction. It’s great.” The new campus includes an impressive Creativity and Innovation Block for science, technology, arts and outreach learning; a 650-seat hall; a multi-purpose wharenui and gym; a learning hub and student centre; and student-friendly courtyards. “The buildings were modelled to a high standard for buildability purposes,” Jarrod observes. “From the start, we also took care to consider the Covid environment and what that would do to supply of materials. We went through everything and ordered in advance as much as possible.” While there were still one or two unavoidable delivery delays, Jarrod says meticulous planning ensured there were minimal holdups to construction work on site. Te Aratai College has a masterplan to accommodate future roll growth. The school’s current capacity is 850 but the demand is such that more learning space is already being planned for construction. In the meantime, the Southbase team remains busy on site building an associated early childhood education facility and a new Kimihia Parent College. Southbase Construction’s partnership approach and professional agility consistently deliver excellence for their clients. At the 2022 NZ Building Industry Awards, two members of the team were highly commended for their contributions: Chad Robinson for the OCHT Brougham Street Social Housing Development project in Christchurch, while design manager Kat Richards was acknowledged as a young achiever. The OCHT Brougham Street development also received an excellence award at this year’s Property Industry Awards. Having been with Southbase for almost nine years, Jarrod can vouch for the positive team culture within the company. “To be honest I love working at Southbase. They support personal development and are a very family-oriented business too.” Jarrod notes there are many more women on the team than is the norm elsewhere in the construction sector. Mental health and wellbeing, education and awareness are also actively promoted. Other education sector projects that Southbase has underway in 2022 include Te Rangihiroa Residential College in Dunedin and the Wakatipu High School extension project.
