Ensors Irrigation and Water Co provides state-of-the-art irrigation solutions and bespoke water features for high end residential and commercial clients around Canterbury and beyond. “There is a scientifically proven link between green spaces and personal wellbeing, so we are not only enhancing environments, but improving lives,” says company founder and director Jeremy Ensor. “My clients often tell me the water feature is their favourite part of their landscape.” Ensors Irrigation and Water Co is now trying to change the game. “My goal is to be the best irrigation installer in the high-end residential market in New Zealand by adapting sports turf technology and practices into the residential sector.” It all starts with good design, and Ensors Irrigation and Water Co works very closely with Jeremy’s father Simon Ensor’s company, Wai-design, a water architect at the cutting edge of irrigation design in New Zealand’s residential and commercial sectors. Jeremy is taking a three-way approach to establishing new irrigation industry standards. Firstly, he is training his own apprentices in a three-year programme, from which graduates receive the New Zealand Certificate in Landscape Construction, the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Levels 3 and 4, and training to survey, design, and install water systems and water features, together with training in water treatment to New Zealand drinking water standards. Secondly, together with Wai-design, Ensors Irrigation and Water Co is focused on sustainability by ensuring that every irrigation system designed and built by the company has an application uniformity of 80% or higher. Now that more of New Zealand is moving towards paying for water, good design becomes more important and may be the difference as to whether applying enough water is economically viable. “An efficient well designed system only uses as much water needed to keep turf and plants healthy, with minimal wastage. Now more than ever is a great time to have your irrigation system audited and see where improvements can save you water and money.” Thirdly, Ensors Irrigation and Water Co is charging for the design of irrigation systems and water features. Clients own their design and can choose who installs it. “Our design process starts with a site visit so we can see all the different aspects of the sun and around a property, test the pressure and flow available, as well as assessing the soil type,” Jeremy says. “Not all soil is the same, and requires different amounts of water applied at different rates for plants to thrive.” Growing up on his parents’ North Canterbury export flower farm, Jeremy has been watering the garden since he was old enough to hold a hose. His lifelong hobby of keeping aquariums eventually pointed him towards applying the same nitrogen cycle of a fish tank to larger scale outdoor ponds and water features. Today, he uses biofiltration in as many systems as possible, introducing good bacteria which becomes the top of the food chain and removes contaminants, eliminating the need for added chlorine or sterilising agents.
