A recently completed project was the design and build upgrade of the road access to the new Paparoa track for Grey District Council finished around 18 months ago. This saw RCL working through all kinds of weather and navigate the impacts of Covid-19 as it turned a narrow track into a two way road in steep bush clad country. Completed last year was work for the remediation of the closed Fox Glacier landfill to remove the historic landfill and eliminate any further spillages from the site. Many tonnes of waste were removed to Butlers Landfill from the site. RCL then constructed the new cell at Butlers landfill. About 70m wide by 160m long, the new cell was bigger than a rugby field and saw RCL work on the project for over a year. Dave says the project was completed with a small, dedicated RCL team and RCL sourced all materials and completed the aggregate production with its crushing and screening equipment to the specification required. Another recently completed project was Hector Legacy Landfill Seawall 30km north of Westport. RCL sourced the diorite and granite rock for the project from the nearby Jones Creek Quarry, which RCL operates, and Dave says the project also generated local jobs. RCL is currently reconstructing the road access to the Oparara basin for DOC at Kahurangi National Park. Dave says key challenges include operating to strict environmental criteria and in a high rainfall area. “We can only work in the winter as in the summer the road needs to be opened for local businesses for tourism. “We use the services of environmental specialists to sweep each area for kiwi and native bats before commencing work,” he says. RCL was founded by company owner Ross (Rosco) Moore in 1995. Reefton born and bred, Rosco knows the mining industry from the ground up and is proud to run Rosco Contractors from the front, pioneering new projects and leading technical jobs on the company’s existing projects. The company now employs around 100 staff making it a major employer on the West Coast. Dave says that Rosco Contractors reflects Rosco’s hands-on, can-do attitude, which sees it work in the most challenging conditions, whatever the site terrain, weather and level of technical difficulty. In addition to mine rehabilitation, the company’s services include contract mining, civil engineering and providing a full service to quarry owners from development through to drill and blast, quarry operation and materials processing. It also carts coal, gravel, fertilizer and other bulk materials and works with major civil contractors on a variety of projects. At its Reefton base it also operates a consented landfill, which is able to accept a range of contaminated materials from projects as far afield as Canterbury and Golden Bay. Rosco Contractors boasts a large fleet of wholly owned modern equipment focused on reputable brands and most of the plant fleet is available for hire either wet or dry for both short term and long term hire periods. With the involvement of a younger generation of Moores, with son Daniel company operations manager and daughter Aimee managing the office, Rosco Contractors is a firmly West Coast based family business providing strength, security and longevity into the future.
