The boiler now operates on local sustainably sourced wood chips rather than coal. to page 64 A range of sustainability initiatives has seen the McCain Foods plant in Timaru win the Large Energy User Initiative of the Year category in the New Zealand Energy Excellence awards. “We are delighted to be recognised for this award and are tremendously proud of the efforts we have made to decarbonise our Timaru site over the past three years,” says Jordan Jurcina, Plant Manager Timaru. The Timaru plant has 140 permanent employees and processes more than 550 million potatoes a year. In keeping with McCain’s sustainability goals, the plant has initiated several initiatives to transform its operations and reduce emissions generated by the burning of coal. The investment in enhanced energy recovery systems at McCain Timaru will result in a reduction of approximately 30,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. A key improvement has come from the plant’s Boiler Conversion Project. The boiler now operates on local sustainably sourced wood chips rather than coal. The project saw McCain awarded Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry funding on a co-investment basis, which will enable them to continue developing future sustainability initiatives.
