64 | Decarbonising the Timaru operation McCain’s introduced a global initiative to make planet friendly food in 2019. from page 62 BUSINESS NEWS McCain Foods - Timaru The decarbonization project through the transition to cleaner fuel, biomass, puts the plant ahead of its 2025 target. McCain Timaru has also invested in enhanced energy recovery systems throughout the facility and has also completed energy improvement works through its graduate program on OPEX initiatives. Lenard Smythe, Engineering Project Manager says specific benefits at the McCain Timaru plant have included reduced water use, coal consumption and carbon emissions. Carbon emissions were reduced by an estimated 3,990 tonnes per year, coal consumption and energy consumption intensity fell 5 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively, from the previous year, and net electricity savings totalled 56,733 kWh a year. The plant has achieved cost savings of more than $1 million a year. “All of these initiatives mean McCain has met its Energy Transitions Accelerator (ETA) goal for its Timaru plant and we’re well on the way to meeting our goal of going coal-free by 2025,” says Lenard. Jordan says that as a global leading manufacturer of potato products, McCain has always recognised its responsibility to set an example to others in the industry by operating sustainably. “This is more important than ever before, and we knew we needed to accelerate efforts to reduce our impact on a fragile global food system, while also addressing increased consumer demand for more environmentally conscious products. In 2019 we introduced a global initiative to ‘make planet friendly food’. This is McCain’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions and optimise our resource efficiency through initiatives like sustainable water usage and working towards zero-waste on our sites. We are excited to continue finding new ways to protect our planet and making a positive impact in our industry.” “In 2019 we introduced a global initiative to ‘make planet friendly food’.
