Newly opened in Wānaka, Joinery Crew is the manufacturing division of longstanding interior architecture firm Melanie Craig Design, and is proud to be locally manufacturing beautiful bespoke fine furniture with high standards of quality and service. Mel started Melanie Craig Design in a little shed in her backyard in 2005, and the firm initially focused on boutique kitchen architecture. 20-year old Mel was looking to bring more connection between kitchen design and the design throughout the rest of a home. Her mum Gaynor Rodgers came on board soon after, bringing her background in interior design. Already becoming known for stunning kitchen designs, Melanie Craig Design was now being recognised for its holistic approach to design, including everything from the bathroom, wall coverings, flooring, lighting, curtaining, and of course, kitchens. “People come to us and they get the full story,” Mel says. “Often when you’re building a home, you’ll go to the kitchen designer, then the bathroom place, then the interior designer, and not often do those three or four people talk to each other. “So we provide the full experience and that helps us to ensure there is a consistent flow through throughout the home.” After a year of operation, Melanie Craig Design had grown out of that little backyard shed and opened its first studio in Gore. A second studio was opened in Timaru in 2010 and by 2012, Mel and Gaynor achieved her 10 year goal early, with the opening a studio in Wānaka. Melanie Craig Design is now an established and award-winning brand throughout New Zealand and Australia, with the Wānaka studio opening up the business to the international market. The company has set a standard for New Zealand design with a philosophy that focuses on the enjoyable moments of a home, anchored by function for everyday lives. “Real homes are full of character and personality with an eclectic mix of well-used objects - some things mended, patched or new - telling the stories of the people who live there,” Mel says. “We provide a hint of fun, boldness and mischief, and even spice it up with uncommon but refreshing colour contrasts. We love pushing the boundaries with our forward thinking.” This year, Melanie Craig Design has achieved another milestone for growth with the establishment of Joinery Crew and the opening of its brand new, purpose built workshop on Enterprise Drive in Wānaka. “Now we’re able to manufacture all of our fabulous designs,” Mel says. “This allows us to keep a real eye on the detail get things absolutely perfect, with full control over our timeframes. A lot of our joinery is crafted furniture rather than just benchtops and drawers, so it’s all about that quality finish.” Locally-owned and operated Aurora Network contractors.
