COMMUNITY Takahanga Community Facility: LMC Building With stunning views of the Kaikoura waterfront, the Takahanga Community Facility currently under construction is the silver lining born from significant earthquake damage to the Kaikoura Rugby Clubrooms that will embrace the needs of the wider community. Project lead for the Kaikoura Rugby Club, Richard Cotter, says that following the 2016 earthquake, there was a strong desire to future proof the facility by creating a multi-sport hub as well as developing a facility that would meet the needs of the wider Kaikoura community as it continues to grow. The new facility is being built on the same site as the old rugby clubrooms on Takahanga Domain, and adjacent to the Kaikoura Tennis Courts. “After consultation with the local netball club and other sporting groups we looked at the possibility of creating a hub. Currently netball is played at Kaikoura High School, which is quite a distance from this facility. “We have talked to Netball about relocating from the High School to the tennis courts, which are being resurfaced following earthquake damage. Squash, croquet and bowls is already being played there and so the addition of Netball would add to the concept of a hub.” The two-storey building was designed by Damian Mora, from local practice Complete Projects. Encompassing in excess of 350sqm on each floor, the building is designed to incorporate netball and tennis in terms of storage, changing and office facilities. “The ground floor will include the office, canteen, changing rooms, toilets, shower blocks and storage, while the upper level will include a large seating area, commercial kitchen, bar with in-built chiller, wash up area, toilets and storage,” explains Richard. “There will also be a canteen included for the Netball Club to sell refreshments on a Saturday. A deck in excess of one hundred square metres will overlook the rugby grounds and there are stunning views of the ocean out the back of the facility. Eventually we hope that a broad range of community groups will utilise this new facility, and there is already growing interest.” Following a competitive tender process, LMC Construction Ltd was selected as the lead builder. “Our rugby club and sports in general is hugely supported by local companies and most of Kaikoura’s building firms have a lot of staff in the various sporting clubs. It was important to use local businesses in the project as much as possible, so the tender was put out to a number of local construction companies.” “LMC has demonstrated very good organisational skills, an ability to get the work done and has been very easy to work with throughout the project. Demolition of the old club and excavation commenced pre-Christmas last year. The site has historical and ancestral significance as there was a massive pre-European battle, so we had people with archaeological authority as well as local Runanga on site during excavation.” Richard says they are targeting a mid-2024 completion date. ∙ House Excavations ∙ Driveways ∙ Site Scrapes ∙ Blocked Drains New House Drains ∙ Septic Tank Installation & Servicing ∙ Drain Inspections 027 240 5634 | ajdrainage@gmail.com | fb.com/andrewsnow1007 Proudly supporting the Takahanga Sports Facility DESIGN, PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND BUILD SERVICES • Architectural design • Building information modelling (BIM) • Project management • Cost consultancy/management • Main contractor for construction projects 03 421 7980 admin@completeprojects.co.nz www.completeprojects.co.nz ChrisYoung Certified Plumber | Director 0274440131 kkplumbingdrainage@gmail.com Scott Mansfield Certified Drainlayer | Director 0278203238 105 Beach Road, Kaikōura Get in touch for a free quote!
