Dunedin designer and developer Mark Fahey is strongly focused on providing solutions that can help meet local people’s housing needs in a more densified market. According to a report from Dunedin City Council, the city’s annual population grew by only 0.3% on average between 2000 and 2013. Since 2013, that has grown to between 0.8% and 1.4% per year (1100 to 1800 people). Projected demographic trends are towards one- and two-person households, translating to a pressing need for more attached units, such as terraced housing or apartments. As a local designer and developer, Mark is very familiar with the changing market and plays an active role in the local development scene. Lawrence born and bred, Mark attended the local area school before enrolling at Otago Polytechnic/Te Pūkenga to study architectural technology/draughting. After working for a couple of years at Calder Stewart, he then went travelling and working overseas, then back to Calder Stewart where he spent a further 10 years working before launching his own Dunedin-based design practice, Fahey Design, in 2012. Responding to district plan changes allowing for more densification, Mark then launched Maungatua Developments in 2021 as the development vehicle for his design plans. “I’ve ended up doing a number of different developments in Dunedin and project managing some as well. I’ve got a great team of subcontractors that I work with mostly from one project to the next – they get to know what I want and I know what they want.
