Modcon Projects: Countdown Colombo St REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Proud to be working with the team at Modcon Projects. Looking forward to many more projects. Three partners with a remarkable breadth of construction experience and expertise between them defied the Covid slump to make Christchurch construction company Modcon Projects a fast-growing player on the national market. Started in 2019 during the Covid lockdown, Modcon Projects’ directors created a company with a nationwide outlook that has seen it complete projects in Palmerston North, Wellington, Invercargill, Nelson and the West Coast, as well as in its home territory of Canterbury. With a staff of 21, the company delivers tailored and bespoke commercial and residential projects, as well as prefabricated and modular construction, and building maintenance for several key blue-chip clients. Giving the company the flexibility to take on jobs anywhere round the country is their depth of resources and versatile management eight-person carpentry crew that can be sent to any location from their Christchurch base for extended periods if necessary. Modcon Projects was founded by David Gamlen, Ben Pritchard and Ben Michel, all Canterbury raised, and boasting all-encompassing experience in the construction industry over decades. David Gamlen was a corporate construction company who spent 13 years with a big national company, the last seven as South Island manager. Working with him in the same company was Ben Pritchard who has well over 20 years’ experience as a quantity surveyor from a United Kingdom academic background, holding a post-graduate qualification, a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Construction Management and Quantity Surveying. Ben Michel, the third Modcon Projects director and partner, was mentored by David Gamlen throughout his nearly 20 years in the construction industry on a wide range of residential and commercial projects – the two live just around the corner from each other - where Ben gained skills in programming, resourcing and budget management in particular. David has the role of general manager, Ben Pritchard as commercial manager, and Ben Michel as Operations Manager, the latter overseeing the project management team, site management team and their carpentry resources. David and Ben Pritchard wanted to leave the corporate sector and wanted to go out on their own, and both we keen to work with Ben Michel due to his skill set. Ben Michel responded by giving his notice two weeks before the lockdown. rendered him redundant anyway. It certainly wasn’t the ideal time to start up a new construction business when Covid had both the materials and the labour markets tied up in knots. Early ordering of materials and procurement management was one means the company used to get it through the shortages. Their extensive relationship with the industry ensured that labour and subcontract resources were not an issue during this volatile time. Modcon Projects also has valuable experience in global sourcing of products that met New Zealand Standards. This allowed it to offer significant savings to its clients during Covid whose risks were minimized. One of Modcon Projects’ recent jobs is a full refurbishment of the Woolworths Countdown supermarket in Colombo St, Christchurch. This was a fast track fit out and store overhaul. Another is doing capital works around the University of Canterbury campus over the last 2 years, while the Ministry of Education is also an important client. Modcon Projects were put on the Ministry of Education panel for fast track fit out works due to their ability to perform consistently. They were short-listed from over thirty-four contractors locally. “We get most of our work from repeat clients and this has established our good name in the market over the short term. We are also versatile and can travel and operate successfully over the South Island and nationally” Ben Michel says. “We’re able to create opportunities for our clients through our strong tendering ethos and our ability to pre-qualify our sub-contract resources, ensuring only the best resources are used. “This ensures repeat work from key clients and means competitive market pricing consistently.” “We get most of our work from repeat clients and this has established our good name in the market over the short term.” Phone: 03 983 5500 waterfordpress.co.nz Your Business, Your Industry, Your News.
