Fulton Hogan has been operating in Ashburton since the 1980s and branch manager Darcey Roberts says the town has some very successful and long-established businesses. “The majority of the local businesses we have close relationships with have been in Ashburton for a long time,” he says. “They don’t forget you in the good times and the bad, so Ashburton is a great place to work in that regard. Some of the business owners we’ve worked with for over 34 years are now retired, but they still work in or lead local community groups which hand-pick the businesses they want to work with. Fulton Hogan are often asked to support these community funded projects, such as the Sharplin Falls walking track and bridge construction. These projects fit with connecting and supporting our community and our team are proud to be a part of them ” The Ashburton Branch of Fulton Hogan has had a lot of work to do completing Waka Kotahi roading improvement projects. “Last year we replaced a roundabout with a set of traffic lights at the north end of town, now we’re putting a new set and an upgraded rail crossing at the south end of town.” As well as State Highway 1 traffic moving north and south of Ashburton, this new signalised intersection will handle the increasing amount of traffic travelling to and from Lake Hood’s growing residential development. “And we’ve got our Lake Hood quarry down there so there’s 200,000 tons of aggregate coming out of that every year as well. This new intersection will allow heavy vehicles easier access to State Highway 1.” As the Ashburton District grows, Fulton Hogan has been working closely with key developers of infrastructure like the Wareing Group, Kiwi Rail, and Ashburton District Council on the development of the new Fairfield Freight Hub, now under construction by Fulton Hogan. This project will see Ashburton’s rail container terminal in the middle of town moved to the Fairton Industrial area. The move will allow for an increase in local rail freight from 6000 containers to 20,000 containers a year, taking half a million tonnes of freight off the region’s roads, and supporting local businesses and exporters to get their products to market. Fulton Hogan continues to grow to meet traffic management demand, with services covering everything from site inspections and traffic management plans to signage and equipment, and also in land development, where the contractor is actively seeking opportunities for extraction and processing of more aggregates. The labour market is tight so Fulton Hogan Ashburton continues to kick-start careers for new people to the industry with scholarships, apprenticeships, and cadetships. With additional Fulton Hogan teams close to hand in Timaru and Christchurch, Fulton Hogan Ashburton remains well-resourced to continue serving its local community with the successful delivery of infrastructure projects large and small “The majority of the local businesses we have close relationships with have been in Ashburton for a long time.”
