T T from page 54 Kenny Barging TRANSPORT Kenny Barging Manager James Galloway says that Kenny Barging operates within Queen Charlotte Sounds and Tory Channel, then around to Port Underwood, near Cloudy Bay in the east coast of Marlborough Sounds. “We work for a diverse range of customers including bach owners and residents in the Marlborough Sounds. While it’s rare that a brand new bach gets built in the Sounds these days, there’s a lot of renovation and extension work on existing baches. “A lot of our work involves the transport of general cargo and building materials. For example, today we’re transporting a barge load of windows, timber, gravel, and water tanks to the Bay of Many Coves where a helicopter will meet us on site that will heli-lift all that to the customer’s bach.” Transporting heavy equipment like diggers and trucks, particularly with damage caused by floods in recent times is all in a day’s work, though James says no two days are ever the same. “We support a lot of wharf and jetty building and maintenance work, alongside other contractors in the region. We also do a lot of mooring installation and servicing. “There are about 3500 moorings across the region and we look after a significant number within Picton. We do a lot of work for Port Marlborough around the wharfs and development of Port Marlborough itself. “We still transport a little bit of livestock for farms in the region. There’s also the aquaculture industry including salmon farming, though the majority of that work is done by O’Donnell Park Barging.” As part of its growth strategy, in 2021 Kenny Barging and O’Donnell Park Barging invested in Havelock based Johnson’s Barge Services, which services the aquaculture industry, bach owners and farmers and provides general deliveries as far out to D’urville Island. Across the wider team, including Johnson’s Barge Service, 35 staff are employed, providing the loyal customer base with a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise. “We have team members who have been with the business for thirty years,” says James. “All of our staff from Kenny’s, apart from a couple of key guys who operate the vessels, bounce between Kenny Barging and O’Donnell Park Barging operations. “So you get a highly varied approach to the work. Our goal is that everybody can do every ones job. There are fifteen staff across Kenny Barging and O’Donnell Park Barging’s five vessels, ranging from qualified deck hands to skippers, an on-site engineer and office and compliance staff. “We train our team from trainee deck hands all the way through to skippers, developing them right through that process and out them through their skippers course. We currently have three team members who will be doing their skippers ticket next year.” For a business that has been operating for 166 years in various forms, people and people relationships sit at the very heart of the company’s success and longevity. “Our team and how we relate and communicate with each other is really important to us. We’re a group of mates at the same time, and that helps the drive forward and the drive to be better. “You know, if you’re not looking after your people, how can you extend that further out to your customers and the community.” Precision Water Jet Cutting 027 328 2553 info@h20cut.co.nz www.h20cut.co.nz MCDS Marlborough Commercial Diving Services Experienced divers with decades of experience working in a range of environments including ocean, lakes, dams, estuaries, rivers, outfalls. www.mcds.co.nz mcdivingservices@gmail.com Nathan 022 047 2351 Ben 021 0830 9028
