Bill started W Hamilton Building Ltd in 1996 and in that time it has gained a highly respected reputation consistently winning awards for over 15 years at the competition. Bill, who runs W Hamilton Building Ltd with his business partner Greg Cramond, highlights that good partnerships with subcontractors are key to completing an award winning home. “The fact we have won numerous awards at the House of the Year competition over the years demonstrates the consistent high levels of quality we achieve thanks to our team and building partners,” he says. The Registered Master Builder Awards are arguably the most recognised building awards in New Zealand. Each property is judged against a scorecard of 2000 points - 1300 workmanship and 700 design, style and functionality. A bronze award means that a builder achieved 75% of the points available, a silver award means they achieved 82.5% and a gold award is 90%. The highest scoring entry in each category is the category winner, provided the entry attains a minimum gold standard. W H Hamilton Building has also had homes make it to the prestigious Top 100, which only the best homes each year in the competition achieve, including its 2023 winner, which also achieved a regional gold award in the Southern New Home over $4 Million category. The same property also won both the lifestyle award for interior design and the smarthome award. Bill says the architecturally designed Dunedin home was a piece of art itself with multiple angles giving a contemporary and distinctive edge. The main structure of the 415sqm home is concrete poured in situ. The exterior, including the soffits, is clad in standing seam Eurotray with a flush mounted entry door and garage door. Steel beams support the home’s many cantilevered sections, which Bill says were just one of the construction challenges. As many of the interior walls were exposed in-situ concrete on show that in a normal home would be hidden away, Bill says that detail in all aspects of the building process was key.
