SJ Mitchell Building carry out civil and specialist works, building repairs and maintenance, hard landscaping and driveways and general building jobs. They also offer building reports and project management services. The company was a finalist in the small business category of this year’s South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards. Owners Scotty and Deborah Mitchell said it wasn’t easy putting together the 800-word entry for the awards, but they were spurred on by supporters. “People kept saying, oh, you should enter it. Sometimes you just keep your head in the sand and in the work, and people come along and say you’re a good fit for this,” Scotty said. “One of the main features is an in-situ concrete chimney/fireplace feature that’s eight metres high. It really is massive and has taken a lot of engineering.” In the local residential market, Bruce Ensor Builders is noticing a lot of interest in high end homes. to ceiling. It had been inspiring to see the range and calibre of businesses over the evening, Scotty said. “Timaru punches above its weight.” He said while there had been a slow down in new build residential homes in the region, the nature of the company’s services meant it had fared well.
