86 | Company shines against a diverse range of businesses While there had been a slow down in new build residential homes in the region, the nature of the company’s services meant it had fared well. T T from page 85 SJ Mitchell Building BUILDING “We haven’t seen a slow down at all, really. The phone hasn’t stopped ringing.” He said it had helped keep subcontractors going that had been feeling the slow down. “We’ve kept them pretty busy actually.” He said the company prided itself on its communication. “Because that’s where a lot of builders fall over; they don’t ring back.” Offering a range of services, and ones that were often overlooked by other contractors, had given the company an edge, he said. “We’re pretty diverse, really. We mainly do civil work and repairs and maintenance.” They had carried out retirement home projects and were approved contractors to the Timaru District Council with SiteWise accreditation. They also undertake work at Timaru Airport. The team are highly qualified and a quick look at the website shows 23 different qualifications that have been achieved. “We do our own traffic management, our own earthworks, and our own working at heights.” With work building up, the team has kept to just Scotty, his wife Deborah and a “young fella”, along with a subcontractor. Services offered have grown to include project management, coordinating jobs and subcontractors, and carrying out building reports and pre-inspections, and can prepare properties to meet the Government’s healthy homes standards. “We just price up everything and if we get (the job) we will sub it out and project manage it,” Scotty said. He said there was plenty of work outside of new builds, and their work was around 50/50 civil works and renovations. “We certainly don’t want to build new homes. That’s just not what we are in to.” It is the company’s second lease of life after Scotty wound it up in 2015 to take a role at Fulton Hogan. He spent seven years there gaining a number of qualifications and experience in the corporate role. By late October 2021 he had already started doing work for himself, so picked up the company again. “We were really lucky … there’s a lot of repeat customers and that just makes it super, super easy because everybody knows what needs to be done.” Now it was “morphing” into a consultancy, working with clients to create health and safety and traffic management plans to complete their requirements. The company was committed to upskilling, he said. “We are still upskilling all the time and we are always learning. It gives us a pretty competitive advantage as well.” 7 Laughton Street, Timaru P: 03 688 2725 E: jmacjoinery@xtra.co.nz Proud to support SJ Mitchell Building www.jmacjoinery.com Your local building supplier with everything you need for your next project from new buildings or renovations, farm sheds and fencing, to tools and landscaping.
