BUILDING Smith & Sons - Queenstown Renovations and extensions may not be for every builder but they’re the specialty of Smith and Sons and their branches throughout Australia and New Zealand, including Queenstown-based owner Matt Marfell. Smith and Sons is expanding into Canada from its already established presence in Australia and 25 areas in New Zealand, and office manager Rachel Steadman says there’s no shortage of work in the Queenstown and Southern Lakes districts. “Smith and Sons gives us the benefits of national buying power with our preferential suppliers, and our DPC – Design, Plan, Construct – process that allows us to streamline customers’ projects, and provide them with clear steps of how the project will run throughout its various stages,” Rachel says. “DPC provides a full flow-chart, and clients deal with one person throughout. “We manage the whole process, from the initial meeting, through to design development and building consent, internal finishing and on to the physical works and completion documents. “We manage all the sub-trades for every job, ensuring our customers have a stress-free renovation process.” The company’s work is almost all residential but it occasionally takes on light commercial work, including office fit-outs. Queenstown franchise owner Matt completed a carpentry apprenticeship on projects from large architectural builds to commercial work and renovation before moving into business ownership with Smith and Sons Queenstown. Like all the group’s owners, Matt is a qualified carpenter, Licensed Building Practitioner and Master Builders member. “We make a specialty of repairs, extensions, fit-outs, and internal renovations such as kitchens and bathrooms, and that gives the clients the confidence that they’re dealing with “Our Design, Plan, Construct – process provides customers with clear steps of how the project will run.” a builder who has the experience and knowledge required,” Rachel says. “Renovations can be tricky, and each one presents a new learning curve for the builder, which is why specialising in repairs and renos has proved so successful for us.” The Queenstown branch employs four onsite builders, two office staff and a range of independent contractors completing about 25 projects a year, including three or four major ones. Typical of the work it does was a recent large renovation in Arrowtown for Jane and Barry McMeekan, who had bought their three-bedroom parents’ home from their siblings. It required a full re-design and extensive internal demolition, followed by the insertion of steel beams to create an open-plan lounge, new kitchen and bathroom, heating system and new double-glazed windows. “It was a full internal and external renovation of the home to future-proof it for Barry’s and Jane’s retirement,” Rachel says. “They wanted a warm, comfortable and bright home that they could easily spend their time in and utilise for entertaining with family and friends. “While we do these large projects, we also do a lot of smaller renovation works as well, including kitchens and bathrooms. “As an example of costings, we usually find that between $30,000 and $35,000 will be enough to renovate an acrylic-based bathroom, and a fully tiled bathroom between $40,000 and $50,000.” The region’s hard winters mean that as much indoor work as possible is scheduled over this period, and spring brings with it “the silly season,” as Rachel puts it, when the company is flat out with outdoor projects. Rachel says demand for Smith and Sons services in Queenstown and the Lakes District has been intense, and forward work is scheduled well into the New Year.
