Deborah Still Interior Design INTERIOR DESIGN As one of New Zealand’s most sought after interior designers, Deborah Still loves the creativity that is intrinsic to who she is and what she does. Nearly in her fourth decade as the owner of Deborah Still Interior Design, she views her work as a collaboration with her clients, likening the relationship to a mountain guide leading the way and providing assistance, while encouraging people to push their comfort zone. She aims to make the process of discovering her clients’ preferences for materials, colour and texture fun and easy and sees herself as a curator of the elements that go into a great interior design that reflects their personality and interests. To achieve this, Deborah has access to an eclectic range of curtains and blinds, fabric, wallpaper, and many of New Zealand’s top furniture manufacturers for residential and commercial projects as well as working with sectors such as healthcare and aged care. Liaising with highly reputable trades’ people, she can also select building products, joinery, timber, hardware, tiles and flooring. While she has completed many outstanding new projects, Deborah’s work can also involve simple, budget conscious makeovers of the décor in spaces in established homes or elsewhere, and she is an avid upcyler recycler of furniture and accessories. This highlights that engaging an interior designer does not need to be a costly undertaking, Deborah says. “I really enjoy repurposing and rearranging what clients already have that they are emotionally attached to. People have amazing memories around pieces of furniture; it’s where they celebrated birthdays and Christmases and sat around the table and talked about their lives.” In one recent makeover, with her experienced eye and creative flair, Deborah recommended replacing a clunky kitchen table with a new one of a retro design upon being told the old table had no particular significance. With other touches such as feature wallpaper on one wall and a bespoke bookcase that incorporated LED strip lights for ambience, the space became so much more aesthetically pleasing. Deborah offers the option of acting as a consultant and for people to coordinate the project management themselves. “It doesn’t necessarily cost a lot for clients, it actually costs less to engage my services because, first of all, they are not going to make a costly mistake.” One of the challenging aspects of interior design is the huge amount of choice available and it is Deborah’s experience and the networks of suppliers she has great relationships with that really come to the fore. “People get quite bamboozled; when you walk into a shop there’s just so much choice. One of the comments my clients say is ‘you give us enough choice that we feel we’ve had a say, but you don’t give us so much choice that we are overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.” After nearly 40 years in business, Deborah has seen a lot of trends come and go and come again. Today, people are often interested in the provenance of products, and to invest in quality products and materials that have longevity, while recycled items that create the “good old days” sentiment are also part of the creative mix. “Sixties and seventies retro, mid-century furniture is having a real comeback. There’s a real deep nostalgia I feel for the past at the moment.” (03) 684-5011 027 435 7445 341a Church St, Timaru info@steveturnbull.co.nz www.steveturnbull.co.nz EMPLOY A REGISTERED MASTER PAINTER LIMITED PAINTING - PAPER HANGING - GIB STOPPING - AIRLESS SPRAYING Proud to be associated with Deborah Still Interior Design Outstanding Quality & Service
