| 105 T T Rosa Watson Award for home that ‘packs a punch’ Carefully considered use of colour and texture produces a modern, bright and cheerful feel throughout. Jennian Homes West Coast (2014) BUILDING A well-thought out and personalised Westport house has proven that big isn’t always better when it comes to an award-winning home. The Jennian Home West Coast build has caught the eye of industry peers, picking up bronze in the $500,000 to $750,000 category at the 2024 Nelson/Marlborough House of the Year Awards. The elegant home packs three bedrooms, one bathroom and an open-plan living space into 167sqm. Carefully considered use of colour and texture produces a modern, bright and cheerful feel throughout. Bold floral wallpaper features in the entrance, which leads through to a spacious, open-plan living and kitchen/ dining area. Eclectic glass pendants that hang over the kitchen island add a personal touch, while natural light is maximised across the home. The exterior is clad with Linea Oblique on the front facade with Rockcote plaster gable definition. Jennian Homes West Coast managing director Frank O’Toole says the team worked very closely with the clients. “They took one of our standard designs and made a few modifications to suit their own style. There were very, very key points that they were very, very keen to make sure were factored into their home.” An important one was taking in the view of the mountains from the kitchen window. “And they did get that.” The house makes the most of its location and sunlight, as Frank points out. “You can basically see from the whole kitchen out through that window to the hills. The orientation gives a good sunny aspect to the rear of the home, but the home frontage is facing the hills so has really good views looking towards the Paparoa range.” Frank also notes the Dumawall lining was a fantastic addition to the bathroom. “That really lifts the bathroom greatly. It is a real feature in there.” The home had fit the brief perfectly and was exactly what the client had wanted, he says. “It’s a unique home that fits (the client’s) personality perfectly.” “For its size it packs a lot of punch. It’s a charming wee home and perfectly aligned to our client’s needs and wishes.” The judges agreed, saying: “This works to create undeniable street appeal for this customised Jennian George design that has become the perfect forever home for its owners.” The high-quality finish of the build impressed the judges, Frank says. “The guys did a very good job – excellent workmanship. The judges were very favourable when they carried out their judging.” The Jennian branch won two bronzes last year and received a regional gold award in 2019. They also won a silver for a show home in 2016. Building is picking up on the coast as it climbs out of a slowdown like the rest of the country, Frank says. “We’re starting to see a reversal in that now. It’s looking to improve with bigger things to come in the New Year as those interest rates continue to drop.” He was looking forward to seeing construction of flood protection for the town through the Resilient Westport Package that received funding in 2023.
