Wooden Element BUILDING Thirty years ago, Chris Adam embarked on a journey that would shape his life and career – a joinery apprenticeship that led him into the world of residential construction. Today, he stands at the helm of Wooden Element, a company renowned for crafting highend, bespoke architectural homes. Yet, as fate would have it, Chris is currently undertaking his most personal project yet: the construction of his own home in the breathtaking landscape of Wanaka. At Wooden Element, Chris leads a dedicated team focused on individual builds, pouring meticulous attention into each detail to create homes that inspire awe. His latest venture at Landsborough Lane, Wanaka, is no exception. The site was chosen not just for its stunning views of Lake Wanaka, but also for the unique architectural challenges it presented in its design. With its irregular shape and slope, the location required innovative solutions that only a skilled architect like Julia Mercer from Elbow Architects could provide. “It’s a very difficult site,” Chris says. “The slope and irregularity posed significant challenges, especially in preserving the views while ensuring privacy from our close neighbours.” Julia’s expertise was critical in transforming these challenges into an opportunity for creative design. The result: a striking boomerang-shaped, two-storey house clad in cedar, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings. As the build progresses, Chris emphasises the thoughtful design elements of the house. An upstairs glazed living pavilion not only provides shelter from the wind, but also protects against the heat of Central Otago summers, creating a comfortable space for family gatherings. The clever layout includes a rear courtyard that maximises the natural contours of the land, enhancing outdoor living opportunities. With three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a media room, the house is designed for flexible family living. A long driveway leads to a carport beneath the living pavilion, while cast-in-situ walls provide a richly textured ground floor. The expansive views over Lake Wanaka and Mt Roy are complemented by a carefully considered bedroom wing that captures a glimpse of the council reserve at the rear. By October, the mid-floor was already in place, but Chris estimates it will take another year to fully realise this dream home. Chris’s passion for building is rooted in his early experiences. Leaving school at 15 to begin his apprenticeship with Bruce Thickpenny in Whakatane ignited an intense love for craftsmanship. There, he honed his skills on intricate curved joinery and complex laminations, laying the groundwork for a career defined by precision and artistry. His journey took him abroad – to London, Dublin, Germany, and Australia, before he returned to New Zealand, where he worked as a carpenter in Te Kuiti and Taupo. At each stage, Chris was recognised for his ability to deliver intricate finishing details that left a lasting impression. His pride in maintaining tidy worksites mirrors his commitment to quality and excellence. Chris and his family fell in love with Wanaka after attending a local wedding. Upon relocating permanently, he began building beautiful homes locally that reflect his dedication and artistry, including his own.
