Allen Building T T Sue Russell BUILDING Andrew Allen established Southland-based Allen Building in 2021, and after being on his own for most of the first year he now has a team of four working alongside him. This means the company can now comfortably take on two moderate-scale projects at a time. “With the range of projects we take on, from smaller jobs such as decks, right through to building a new home, it’s good to have the ability to work on different projects at the same time, and with the team I have on board now, this makes it possible,” Andrew says. There isn’t too much in the building sphere that Andrew and the team can’t do. Along with providing residential work of all manner and size, they also undertake a significant amount of work in dairy sheds and the like. Located halfway between Invercargill and Winton, Andrew says the business is in a great position to respond well to land-based as well as town and city customers. Southland is a province with an understated sense of prosperity to it, when dairy farmers based in provinces such as Waikato, began to move south in the early 1990s. Today, demand from farmers to upgrade ageing dairy infrastructure, construct and/or repair farm buildings, and repair existing or build new homes, provides the core activity of the company. “We like the variety of work that comes our way. We’re about to start a couple of farm sheds along with a new home in Te Anau, which will get underway by the end of the year.” Asked whether the intention is to grow considerably larger in scale, Andrew says he is happy with the size and situation of the business today. “We’ve seen things tightening up in the last six months, and so it’s important I have enough work coming in to keep the current team busy. If I was to take on more staff, it comes with additional pressure to have more work and at this time, I can’t justify that.” Andrew cut his teeth in construction working for well known Southland building business Barry Stewart Construction, undertaking large commercial projects. This formative work gave him the experience to tackle a wide array of projects which, he says, works well for his company. “When I was at school it was always my intention to be working in some way in construction. It’s a career where, with hard work and offering great service to customers you can do well, and I’m pleased we’re in the situation now, in a relatively short few years of having a small team on board.” While based in Southland, Allen Building works across Otago as well and Andrew says he’s proud of the reputation the company has garnered since its founding. “We operate to a pretty simple set of expectations of ourselves – to provide our customers with a hassle-free experience and to look after a project from beginning to end. We achieve this by working with a team of professional, well-respected designers, consultants and sub-trades and offer an experience our customers get from working with a small and very focussed local business.” Proud to support Allen Building use...
