Principal Scott Haines is both proud and delighted. “I’ve been a principal for 15 years and I’ve had the privilege of visiting many other schools in New Zealand and around the world,” he says. “In my assessment, our new block, Pukehinau, would stack up with the best teaching spaces anywhere in the world.” Pukehinau contains especially kitted-out spaces for biology, chemistry and physics courses, digital technologies and electronics, food and textiles, materials technology, and design and visual communication. “These were pretty expensive spaces to build and we’ve had a five-year delay with planning, consenting, and funding issues. It’s probably four years too many, considering the students who generated that initial provision are now in their first years of university.” Built over the past year by Naylor Love, and opening on day one of term three, Pukehinau was supposed to provide expansion for the school. However, after detailed seismic assessments on its I and J blocks were received by the school’s board in March, both buildings, with their combined 24 classrooms, were determined to be below the minimum level of earthquake rating required under the New Build Standard, and are now in the process of being demolished. “We’re in negotiations with the Ministry about the replacement of I and J blocks,” Scott says. “We are in discussions about what they quantum of replacement teaching spaces will look like.” With this exclusive Pukehinau facility now well into operation and much appreciated by Burnside High School’s student population, Managing director Simon O’Dowd says the company is a leader in the aged-care industry. “Qestral believes in a unique retirement experience, which combines the very best lifestyle with safe-guarded health, known for providing innovative, future-focused retirement living solutions with services like the award-winning Spritely health-monitoring system.” An exciting inclusion in the Coastal View development is the new Yacht Club that is currently under construction and is being built by Nelson construction company Gibbons Naylor. The Yacht Club is scheduled to be completed in May next year and will include a movie theatre, indoor heated swimming pool, spa, restaurant, café, bar, bakery, massage room, hairdressing salon, gymnasium, library and wellness centre. “The facility will have expansive views over Tasman Bay and will be an entertainment and activities hub for village residents,” Simon says. “The addition of the Yacht Club promises to enhance the village’s social offerings.” The Coastal View Lifestyle Village was established in March 2021, with its first stage of houses and care centre opening at that time. “Qestral villages prioritises care facilities early in the development, and is an integral part of Coast View,” says Simon. “From the beginning, Coastal View offered rest home and hospital care, giving residents comprehensive support from the outset.” Today, the village has expanded to offer a blend of independent living and healthcare services, including specialised dementia care.“What sets it apart is its prime coastal location, stunning views, and innovative health monitoring systems, creating a premium retirement experience.” Scott says the challenge for him now is to get the rest of the school’s building stock up to that level. “Our buildings now range from the highest-quality standard to other buildings, which are well past their useful economic life. One of our buildings, which we’re really not very proud of, is 65 years old and was earmarked for demolition in 2011. “Even our demolished earthquake-prone buildings were much newer at 20 years old and much nicer. We recognise the Ministry has an inordinate job with the critical under-investment in school property for a number of years. We respect that.” Meanwhile, Naylor Love proved a sympathetic and first-rate construction partner and completed Pukehinau on time, on budget, and with the minimum of disruption to the school’s programme of events. “They were outstanding, and we would be very pleased to engage with them again in future,” Scott says. “The thing that makes for a good construction partner, not only in the education sector, the number one is communication. “When we understand what they need to do and when they need to do it and even why they need to do it that way, it enables me to prepare my team, and for them to prepare their students. “We would meet regularly with Naylor Love to talk about what we both had coming up and any potential clashes. Come exam time, they would stop their noisy work and do other things to accommodate our needs, and on our sports days, they would work inside rather than outside.” “Our new block, Pukehinau, would stack up with the best teaching spaces anywhere in the world.” 308 Trents Rd.
