REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT fabrication and welding of aluminium, steel and stainless steel. The team can also tackle complex mechanical assembly and is skilled in end-to-end logistics management. “Looking back over the past 30 years, it has been a great journey,” remarks John Down, ENI founder and managing director. “Two of us started in 1993, just getting on with it as a couple of tradesmen and doing what we could. Within a very short period of time, we were building quite a demand for our services. “We ended up with nine staff in the first six months and grew dramatically from there to around 50 staff in the first five years.” Key to ENI’s success has been having a great team. John has worked hard to foster and grow talent through the years, investing in both people and plant. The workplace culture is aspirational, supporting ENI’s ambition to be better every day. As well as developing a safe working environment for staff, ENI seeks to provide opportunities for young people to come through the business and learn, grow and thrive. With 30 years’ experience, combined with a caring workplace culture and a skilled team equipped with the latest machinery and technology, ENI Manufacturing is well-positioned for its next 30-year business journey. In the South Island, RDL regularly works with fellow industry frontrunner, Christchurch-based ENI Engineering, (currently rebranding as ENI Manufacturing) to provide quality products and solutions for the power utilities market. “RDL has worked alongside ENI for more than 15 years,” says Dean Ellis, RDL Managing Director, who leads RDL’s technical support and product development, as well as overseeing sales and business operations. “We have worked closely to establish and grow a business supplying low voltage power distribution products to network companies throughout the South Island, with the largest being Orion in Christchurch. In addition, ENI provide the aluminium pillar cabinets to RDL, which are used throughout New Zealand, primarily within the low voltage market.” By bringing their combined expertise together, ENI and RDL are able to deliver industry leading, cost-competitive solutions. “We work through ENI, providing them products and technical support and ENI is our major stockist in the South Island.” Dean’s father Doug Ellis founded RDL in 1973. The company’s operational hub, employing a team of 10, is in Onehunga, Auckland, where RDL has been based since 1982. Today, RDL is an established leader in low voltage network distribution solutions and a preferred industry supplier of quality products and services. A low voltage network – or secondary network – is a part of the electricity power distribution system that carries electricity from distribution transformers to the end customers. These secondary networks are operated at a low voltage level, typically equivalent to the mains voltage of electrical appliances. “Our focus at RDL is on providing products that protect the distribution cables on the underground portion of low voltage networks.” Sourced from world leading manufacturers, RDL’s extensive product range includes transformer distribution panels, link pillars, service pillars and an array of low voltage fusing and protection products. RDL is committed to customer service, short lead times and new product development. Among their network customers are Vector, Powerco, Orion and Wellington Electricity while bigger customers on the contractor’s side include Northpower, Omexom, Downer, Ventia and Connetics, along with electrical wholesalers Corys, Ideal, JA Russell and Scott. “The path ahead in 2025 looks increasingly positive as both RDL and ENI continue to work together to provide new products and solutions for a constantly growing market with new generation technologies, such as solar and wind, becoming more prevalent.” RDL & ENI together bringing industry leading solutions
