Enztec T T Bernadette Cooney REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Medical equipment manufacturer Enztec, globally recognised for its innovative, high-quality orthopaedic instruments, has invested heavily in research and development and increasing its manufacturing capabilities. This as it positions itself as a trusted partner within the global orthopaedic market, one that exceeds $US60 billion annually. After 30 years in business, Christchurch based Enztec remains a New Zealand-owned company consistently focused on the design and manufacture of orthopaedic instruments and devices for implant companies and surgeons worldwide. The instruments produced by Enztec are not simple tools, but highly specialised products that ensure the precise placement of implants during hip, knee, spine and shoulder surgeries, says Enztec CEO Iain McMillan. “Our products enable surgeons to improve patient outcomes and surgical efficiencies, so they can get through more cases in a day and turn some surgeries into day-stay procedure,s which is highly normalised in many of the markets we serve. “What leads to a great outcome for a patient is how well a surgeon can put an implant into a patient. How well you fit it, affects how well it performs in the future,” says Iain. Export is at the heart of Enztec’s business, with 98% of its products sold internationally to global medical industry leaders such as Smith Nephew, Stryker and DePuy Synthes. Enztec business development manager Sarah Thompson: “We’re selling to the leaders in the industry, and they rely on us for end-to-end solutions, from design and regulatory clearance to manufacturing and quality control. We are not a commodity player. We are seen as a very high-end brand that customers want to be associating with.” Two per cent of the instruments are sold domestically, but many products will return to be used within New Zealand, via international distributors. Iain highlights that Enztec reinvests all profits into research and development, regulatory systems, and manufacturing, underscoring the company’s long-term vision of growth. “Every cent of profit we have made has been reinvested back into the business, into R&D, and growing our capability.” Enztec’s commitment to innovation is evidenced by its multi-million-dollar investment into new plant, personnel and business-wide systems in anticipation of further evolution. “We have a new facility we invested in six years ago and we continue to invest in our manufacturing base, our digital systems, machinery and our quality and regulatory services in order to remain a substantial high-value exporter,” says Iain. Enztec has achieved stringent FDA, MDR and ISO international accreditations, exemplifying the importance of regulatory compliance in differentiating itself from competitors. “It’s a huge differentiator. Not just on product innovation but the completeness of our offering.” This dedication to regulatory excellence ensures that Enztec remains a trusted supplier in an industry where precision and safety are paramount. Enztec employs 100 people and relies on trusted local businesses for additional machining capacity, growing not only their own business but others in Canterbury and surrounding regions. 1 Tanner St, Woolston www.contex.co.nz 03 389 9296 tleonard@contex.co.nz Proudly supporting Enztec NZ’S SPECIALIST PROVIDER OF: • CNC Machining • High Precision Engineering • Prototyping • Manufacturing PROUDLY SUPPORTING ENZTEC 03 348 2631 51 Falsgrave Street, Waltham, Christchurch www.contour-engineering.com MACHINING CERTAINTY OURCLIENTSHAVETHE CONFIDENCETHATWHEN THINGSNEEDTOCOME TOGETHER, THEY’LLBE ABLETODELIVER. +64 03 477 3043 | admin@unitedmachinists.co.nz | www.unitedmachinists.co.nz United Machinist’s ISO:9001 Accredited CNC machine shop provides precision machined components for aerospace, electronics, automotive, medical and marine applications.
