| 47 T T Sue Russell Roofing specialists on top of their game Tim Yeo Contracting is a specialist roofing company servicing Invercargill, Southland and Fiordland. Tim Yeo Contracting CONTRACTING Tim and Sandra Yeo are enjoying the benefits that come from working and living in, what they describe, as a thriving part of the country, Southland. The couple own and operate Tim Yeo Contracting, a specialist roofing company servicing Invercargill, Southland and Fiordland “Southland is one of the wealthiest provinces in New Zealand and there are a significant number of new industrial precincts being established to support this growth,” Sandra explains. She says that roofing and alied services are in Tim’s blood, with a father who operates a successful plumbing/roofing company. The children often went out on jobs with their father and cut their teeth in the industry. They have been in the roofing service sector long enough to recall that back in the ’90s the industry was in a pretty tough situation. For many years, Tim and Sandra operated in a partnership; however, they formed Tim Yeo Contracting in 2005, to create a growth path for the business ahead. “We can remember when it was really hard going but just kept working and delivering great results for customers and now, all these years later we’re extremely busy,” says Sandra. These days, its not uncommon for Tim and the team, including Tim’s brother, who sub-contracts to the business, to be replacing roofs two or three times for customers as they move to new homes. The bulk of work is residential, with contracting to builders operating in that sector, along with specialist agricultural building companies such as Winton Engineering, who supply large wintering sheds on farms as well as commercial work as opportunities are presented. “We’ve recently completed a very large build for Scania Trucks, undertaking construction of the roof and walls, including all the spouting, literally the whole building except the down-pipes.” Working with Tim is a team of five other roofers, with one of the youngest having been with the company since leaving school and just completing his apprenticeship last year. Sandra says in their opinion the training pathway for those keen to become qualified could be better organised. “The theory around roofing involves a lot of trigonometry, and not everyone has the sort of brain to be able to understand this from the theoretical side, so we put in a lot of time helping him out in a hands-on way. Working out what is needed, doing the problem solving in a practical way often suits those learning the trade much better.” While leading the company and organising work, Tim and Sandra are both engaged on the tools as well as doing all the measuring, and the organising of materials needed for each job. Teams of two or three form around each project, enabling more than one job to be undertaken at a time. “We find this current size works well, because it means Tim and I can be out on the tools, which we love. We’ve been larger in the past, in terms of team numbers, but this current size fits demand well.” Looking ahead, Sandra says there are a couple of big wintering sheds coming up through October and November and another one early next year. “Winton Engineering just come to us when projects of this nature are on, as they understand we’ve got the systems that work well for the types of work they undertake. Tim project manages as well.” Tim Yeo Contracting understands that choosing the right kind of roofing can be confusing for clients. This is where their years of experience in covering and cladding all sorts of structures, from residential to large-scale commercial, comes into its own. “We use Zincalume and Colorcote products because they offer great durability and looks. They’re very versatile.” Along with new roofing projects, Tim and Sandra provide re-roofing and roofing repair services, continuous spouting and fascia products. “We also offer customers a Roofview App they can download from our website. This allows them to try different profiles and colours to really get a sense of how the new roof will look in reality.” PRESTON PRE-CUT LTD MANUFACTURERS OF ROOF TRUSSES AND WALL FRAMES Ph: 03 218 3647 • Brent Cell: 0274 15 1963 30 Mersey St, Invercargill • Email: prestonprecuts@xtra.co.nz • Prenail Frames • Roof Trusses • Loose Timber NZO SG • Claw Beams • Laminated and LVL Timbers Suppliers of: 0508 KONNECT (566 632) KONNECTFASTENINGSYSTEMS.CO.NZ Your one stop shop for all roo ng accessory needs Proud to supply the NZ Roofing Industry
