Sangster Electrical CONTRACTING Jason Lee, director of Cromwell-based Sangster Electrical, took over running the company shortly after the first Covid lockdown, when the then owner, Duncan Sangster, passed away suddenly. Talks were already underway at that time for Jason to eventually take over leadership. “The company is really 30-plus-years old, from when Duncan established it. When I first came into the business, we undertook a little bit of housing work, but were more driven by the demands of the market in this region, around irrigation supply, servicing and development of fruit packhouses and wineries with the need for electrical and industrial automation services.” While the team is relatively small, with six tradesmen and an office administrator, Jason says, it’s a good fit and size for the type of projects they get involved in today, but growth is always on the cards. “One of the team, involved in the electronic componentry and design side of work, has been with us for 30 years. We are in the process of doing some pretty cool little things. Automating systems is a big part of what we do.” Jason says given the range of projects they get involved in, for anyone new to the electrical trade, coming in at entry level, a world of opportunity and experience awaits. “If you were to start off as an apprentice, you will get a huge variation of work to undertake across quite an extensive geography. While the bulk of our work is in the industries that are based in Central Otago, we’ve done work in Dunedin and throughout Otago.” Jason involves himself with overseeing all the projects, from sourcing and pricing projects, to liaising with clients throughout the process. He says a key challenge with pricing is to be able to explain how a value has been reached and what the points of difference may be between prices. “Often, it’s a case of presenting a client with a new way to create the outcome desired and this is where our years of experience in the sector comes to the fore.” Central Otago is an area where new development and industry are always being established. A potential gold mine just up the road is a good example of the opportunities conducting business in the region present. Jason says looking ahead, there’s definitely a feeling of more industry coming to town, with especially more and more processing plants. “This is great, because it gives us more scope to get into projects where our experience and expertise can really shine.” And given the nature of projects, often at the heart of how a processing plant operates most efficiently, Jason says that being local makes a difference for clients. “We’re there when vital repairs to electrical infrastructure and systems are needed to be handled as soon as possible, and because the business has been around for such a long time ere, people know they can rely on us to be there and get the job done in the fastest possible time.” Plans at some point further down the track are to move into more substantial premises; However, at this time Jason says the team are more than able to manage the projects that come their way efficiently. Along with designing, supplying and servicing major commercial industries in the region, Sangster Electrical also offers emergency electrical services. “We have a team of electricians available 24/7 to get the repair done and things back on track. We also provide comprehensive electrical consultancy services and engage with clients right at the start of the project to ensure they have all the information they need to make the right decision. It’s about offering clients a wrap-around service to ensure they get the best bang for their buck and outcomes they desire.” Proud to support Sangster Electrical OTAGO 165 Dukes Road North, Mosgiel, Dunedin.
