50 | Ethical standards underpin longevity TRANSPORT Neumanns Tyre Services - Ashburton T T Sue Russell “We want to see our customers’ businesses thriving and this is one way we can support that to happen. We also provide a vulcanising service with tyres coming to Ashburton for repair, even including large tyres from the mines on the West Coast.” In an industry where very few tyre companies have lasted as long, Neumanns Tyres Ashburton has a long and proud history extending back some 80 years. Established by Len and Kath Neumann in 1945, today the business is in its third generation of family, with granddaughter Emma and grandson Vinnie part of its fabric. Len’s sons Alan and Ian are still running the business, while Emma and Vinnie are playing an increasingly larger role in its day-to-day operation. As is often the case, it was Len’s hard work and an ability to see opportunities to build the business in those founding years that created the bones of the company that still operate today, something Emma says everyone working in the company is very proud of. “Len built up the business by providing what customers wanted (great service) and going the extra mile. He created strong and engaging relationships with business owners and farmers in the district, and everyone knew they would get great service under his watch. So much so that our Mission Statement reflects these ideals.” How the business conducts itself today is based around reflecting these founding principles with a commitment to quality products and excellent service, and to developing a highly motivated team responsive to customers’ needs. “We practise the highest ethical and professional business standards.” And with such a driving commitment to see the company flourish, today, Neumanns Tyres and its allied branches Tyre General, extend across a significant South Island footprint, with 16 branches and a combined team of 160 employees. Emma says everyone in the company understands that it is good service and competitive prices that keep bringing customers back, when there are options to go elsewhere for tyre servicing. With its independent status, Neumanns Tyres offers customers a very extensive selection of tyre brands. Another huge part of Neumanns Tyres’ success story is the loyalty of long-serving staff, something the Neumanns are very proud of. “It’s not uncommon to see the third or fourth generation of customer from those who Len supplied services to, choosing to have their tyres repaired or replaced with us, and we take great satisfaction from this,” says Emma. For farmers and commercial clients, Neumanns Tyres offers on-site servicing to reduce down-time of their machinery, something the Neumann family know they very much value. With very strong ties to Mid Canterbury’s agriculture sector, the company is a proud supplier to Ruralco. With its on-farm fleet servicing, Neumanns Tyres offers a 24/7 repair service. “We want to see our customers’ businesses thriving and this is one way we can support that to happen. “We also provide a vulcanising service with tyres coming to Ashburton for repair, even including large tyres from the mines on the West Coast.” As a significant business in Ashburton, Neumanns Tyres offer young people the opportunity to learn the tyre service trade from entry level, something Emma says they enjoy. “It’s nice to see people trained properly from the start. We have a large variety of tyres, from wheelbarrow to big scraper tyres and everything in between, so there’s plenty of variety for those learning the trade.” Having now seen through eight decades, from humble beginnings, Neumanns Tyres and its network of Tyre General outlets, still reflect the values and principles of Neumanns Tyres.
