58 | James Hunter Architectural Design ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Delivering a wide variety of projects James Hunter has designed many multi-unit developments in Christchurch. T T Rosa Watson For Christchurch-based architectural designer James Hunter, the city and surrounding regions are delivering a wide and varied range of interesting projects to work on. From a bach in Te Anau, the West Coast or Arthur’s Pass, to homes in Queenstown, Christchurch, Banks Peninsula and the greater Canterbury area, to earthquake repair, and restoration work on both private and public historic buildings, the practice has been involved in them all. Projects include work on the Canterbury Provincial buildings and the Edmonds Band Rotunda, the repair of leaky homes of all description, alterations and additions of all sizes encompassing a wide range of building styles and materials, plus new, multi-unit housing developments. James has been in practice for more than 30 years, during which time he has been involved in building design and construction projects in New Zealand, England and Dubai. Having built up a wealth of knowledge over this period, he offers a mature and thoughtful perspective to a project, his aim being to create a design for the individual client, rather than an “off the shelf” plan. “While there may be similarities between projects, no two projects are ever alike. There will be a difference in client preferences, site orientation, outlook, location, style etc.,” James explains. A residential and commercial property design specialist, he approaches each project with an open mind, driven by the client’s brief and budget to create unique, bespoke and functional homes with thoughtful planning and design. As part of his service, James Hunter Architectural will submit documents to local councils for processing building consent documentation to create a more stress-free experience. He has built strong connections within the industry over the years and can recommend builders, engineering consultants, surveyors, acoustic specialists, and liaise with building contractors, consultants and councils to make the whole design and building process a seamless experience. He says some clients have a strong idea of what they want and how the project should look, while others are just starting out on the journey and need some guidance. This is where experience makes a difference. The practice likes to work collaboratively with the client to provide a result the client can take great pleasure in, no matter the size, budget or location. “When clients are thinking of undertaking a project, typically they’ll ask friends and family if they know someone that is good, that can listen, that they have worked with and have experience with a particular type of work.” James Hunter Architectural excels in all these areas, as shown by the number of project referrals and returning customers. James adds that since the Christchurch earthquakes, the smaller towns around Canterbury have experienced growth with population movement and growth in general. This has led to a variety of housing typologies being built to cater for demand. Christchurch continues to see multi-unit developments being constructed, and with the proposed changes to the Christchurch District Plan, James says he expects to see new types of housing to take advantage of these changes.
