SemiCreative T T Kelly Deeks INTERIOR DESIGN A steady stream of superb projects continues to come out of young Christchurch spatial design studio SemiCreative, with four projects featuring in this year’s Best Awards. One of these projects, the new Studio Dental building in Papanui, was also a finalist in the prestigious Interiors Awards. SemiCreative has only been in business since 2020 and has featured heavily in the awards space for the past two years. Owner James Irvine took home the Interiors Awards’ Hospitality Award in 2022 for his thoughtful and sensitive treatment of a landmark building with SemiCreative’s third-ever project and his first award entry, Seven. The Studio Dental project was completed in collaboration with Fabric Architecture. This building is set to redefine the dental experience, housing the latest in dental technology and state-of-the-art equipment inside a warm and welcoming environment where patients can discuss their oral health at ease. Complementing Fabric Architecture’s clean, white exterior complete with an ornate lattice screen, inspired by the owner’s Korean heritage, SemiCreative takes the patient through a transition into a calm and relaxing, almost spa-like space, with curved furniture and warm, earthy tones, which continue into the dental studios. “Here, the colour palette reverts back to a white core, emphasising the clinical, hygienic aspects of the space while maintaining a connection to the warmth of the reception areas,” says James. He says Studio Dental director Dr Jenny Kim is a highly accomplished dentist and now has a space that can match the quality of the service she offers. This project also features as a finalist in the Best Awards, alongside SemiCreative’s work on Grizzly Baked Goods’ latest offering in the heart of Christchurch’s business district. Located on the ground floor of the Warren and Mahoney building on Cashel Street, Grizzly has scaled up on its humble beginnings selling bagels at local farmers markets. Now supplying a notable proportion of Canterbury’s bread into restaurants and hospitality venues, Grizzly has opened a new cafe and bakery at an almost perfect site. “Our brief was to design a high-traffic spatial solution that would sit pretty within the new space, whilst carrying the same character as their original and humble hole-in-the-wall bakery window,” James says. “We opted for a durable, three-tier tiling system to counter the busy location.” A base grid for this spatial layout is formed by a terracotta floor, where a dark-flecked terrazzo toe-kick extrudes from the grout lines and subtle, small-format white mosaic tiles hero the goods on offer. James worked closely with Rich from Greyburn Building and Landscapes, who meticulously ensured every surface had a flush joint, and every grout line aligned with a piece of furniture or other fixture. With an obvious flair for hospitality design, where he aims to find the balance between location, fit-out design, and offering, James has now taken his first foray into residential design with two hospitality industry clients, and both these projects have made it into the finals of the Best Awards 2024. We offer a full, award-winning interior design service including kitchens, bathroom joinery, laundries and custom wardrobes.
