The gold award for a new home in the $500,000 to $750,000 category went to a home built by David Reid Homes Canterbury, initially intended as a show home. However, having perfectly met market demand, it was quickly snapped up by a buyer amid significant interest in this one-of-a-kind, pavilion-style home. “We always try to do something unique with each of our show homes,” says David Reid Homes Canterbury director of construction, Carl Fordyce. “Since this one is located in Halswell, where it can be quite windy, the site on the south side of the street posed a particular challenge. However, we’re experienced with such conditions, and we have a strong relationship with the developer, allowing us to assist with some of the trickier sections.” To meet Carl’s preference for a distinctive design and Halswell’s demand for sheltered outdoor living, David Reid Homes Canterbury designed this home with a beautiful and heavily glazed internal courtyard at the end of the hallway between the two pavilions, accessed from both sides via sliders, and large enough to accommodate a table and chairs for sheltered alfresco dining. “It brings abundant light into the hallway and living spaces, offering a clear view from the front to the back of the home, which enhances the overall sense of space as you move through the dwelling.” With its straightforward use of forms and materials, this home strikes a balance between aesthetic appeal and functionality for a simple and cost-effective yet elegant living environment that unsurprisingly impressed competition judges as much as it did prospective buyers. David Reid Homes Canterbury’s silver award this year was for a custom-built home on a client’s existing section in Fendalton. The much-loved but earthquake-damaged home was relocated and is now serving as a farm manager’s house in Waimate. The biggest challenge on the site was a large oak tree in the front yard. Its presence was felt early in the project, as the original home had to be split in half to move it around the tree and off the site. The oak tree required early consideration during the design phase, which led David Reid Homes Canterbury to create a series of three distinct pavilions. The living and dining areas offer direct views of the tree and the surrounding area on both sides of the home. “This is really crucial to the architectural ethos, creating a calm and relaxing retreat,” Carl says. The main north-east living area is the centrepiece of the home, anchoring the sleeping quarters to the left, and a third self-contained, two-level pavilion to the right. High ceilings and a generous array of skylights in the living space create an open feel and throw light all around the room during different parts of the day. David Reid Homes Canterbury is currently in the design and consent phase for a new show home to replace the one sold in Halswell. This time, it is planned for Highsted, and Carl is incorporating more unique features alongside the high-quality craftsmanship that David Reid Homes is known for. www . one s qua r e r a t e . co . nz Call 022 177 6416 • admin@perfectionplasterers.co.nz • www.perfectionplasterers.nz • Licensed applicator of lightweight concrete panel • Polystyrene, brick and block plastering • New and existing homes • Repairs and repaints • Free quotes
