His sense of adventure and love for the outdoors is fed into each and every project, as Abode strives to provide uniqueness and functionality for every client, no matter what the budget. “The longer I build here in the basin, the more I realise people want to be connected to the dramatic environment that surrounds us.” Ben welcomes the opportunity of bridging the gap between indoors and outdoors, rustic and modern, old and new. Recycling, repurposing and restoration of raw materials enhances the connection to both place, history and environment. One of Abode’s designs proudly stands at the foot of the Remarkables in Jack’s Point. It features 12 tonnes of reclaimed Australian hardwood bridge beams, which were repurposed from a dismantled railway bridge in the Catlins. Local logging trucks were used to access and relocate the timber. Ben admits it was logistically difficult, but “well worth it” when you see the finished project. “Handcrafting hardwood to create bespoke alpine homes is my thing, it takes me back to the farm with my dad and my brother – it’s in my DNA.” Sustainably sourced New Zealand beech selected from wind-fallen trees on the West Coast has also featured in several projects, bringing beautiful forest warmth into indoor spaces.
