DP Built Ltd T T Kelly Deeks “We’ve set up our team with a clear hierarchy, so our apprentices know the people above them are there to mentor and teach them, and it’s their job to support them.” BUILDING After three years in business, Christchurch’s DP Built is still growing through tight times, thanks to exceptional results and a strong network of carefully nurtured relationships. Dylan Paterson got into the construction industry shortly after the Christchurch earthquakes while he was a student at Lincoln University. Labouring for his cousin’s building firm, he developed a love for the trade and soon started his apprenticeship, working on earthquake repairs, new-build residential, and light commercial projects, really honing his skills with a variety of projects and methodologies. After running a feature project in Queenstown, Dylan realised he could be doing the same thing for himself, so came back to Christchurch in 2021 and established DP Built. Starting out with small renovation projects, DP Built was soon approached by an architect Dylan had played hockey with. “He asked me how many people I had and I said ‘one’. Then he asked if I could build a set of four multi-units and I said I could, but I would need some more people. So I got in touch with a couple of builders I knew and they came to work for me, and our first four, new-build projects were all multi-units for the same architect.” Dylan has continued to grow his team at DP Built through his network of personal contacts, and his apprentices are friends of friends, who knew what type of people DP Built would be made up of. “It’s all about trying to find people with the right attitude. I like to listen to my lads, find out what they’re into and what they want to learn, and manoeuvre them around so they are learning. DO OUR READERS KNOW YOU EXIST? “We’ve set up our team with a clear hierarchy, so our apprentices know the people above them are there to mentor and teach them, and it’s their job to support them. “Everyone understands what their role is and is working towards moving into the next role. The lads work pretty hard and I take a lot of pride in seeing them grow.” Starting out during the post-Covid construction boom gave Dylan a steep learning curve to climb, but also an opportunity to learn how to manage the full range of issues that came with it. “ “We couldn’t get any materials! I bought some timber off Marketplace and we explored every other option to get materials. “We were lucky because this architect understood the challenges that were unprecedented. We were very privileged to work with him and without that relationship, we wouldn’t be in the position we are in now.” Boom time taught Dylan the importance of his supplier relationships and he leaned hard on them during that time. “They had to allocate the materials they had and their decisions could make or break your job. “Now, demand has dropped and there is plenty of supply. It’s good to see the pricing points are steadying and becoming more competitive.” Dylan says the market is improving and DP Built is seeing more and more sets of plans coming through the door. He has a couple of sizable renovation projects, as well as some more new builds coming up, and he continues to look at any project where the comprehensive approach DP Built takes to its project can be applied. 0210610807 www.talonplumbing.nz PLUMBINGLTD Your Local Plumbing Expert New Builds Maintenance Filtration Hot Water Services Renovations Repairs For all your interior and exterior painting and decorating needs.
